Socks - 2012-01-16 4:26 AM I think its individual.  I went to a nutritionist once who insisted that the reason I could not loose those last few pounds was diet coke.  She promised I would loose 3# the week I went off it.  OK. I weaned off of it and went without for about 2 weeks and I didn't loose a pound.  Its one of the few things that was making me happy.  I like it, it actually curbs my appetite and I am not giving it up.

X2...I eat really healthy otherwise, exercise a ton with training, and this is my one "vice".

What about diet sodas with other sweeteners?  Diet Rite uses splenda.  They have cola (yuck) cherry cola (decent) orange (good) white grape (okay), and more.  I'm curious if anyone knows of a body of evidence that shows the same effects of sugar cravings with splenda as aspertame?

I think the non-cola diet rites are all caffeine free too.

Diet soda has ZERO calories. It cannot cause weight gain, or prevent weight loss.

Weight loss is about calorie deficit, and something without calories can't add calories to your diet. It may be that diet soda creates sugar cravings as mentioned above, but if you give in to those cravings it's your own fault if you gain weight not the soda's. This is similar to the argument that exercise causes weight gain because it increases appetite, and some people follow a workout with a donut to satisfy that appetiet. Don't eat the damn donut!

Excellent point.  Too bad many of us are here because we struggle saying no to those cravings...  Ultimately, we are all at fault/responsible for our weight.  Its taking responsibility for ourselves that leads to improvement and long term success.  Thanks for pointing out a core fact though.

AU83...how is it going?  Did you decide to cut out the diet soda?

I LOVE fizzy drinks and agree with ??lisac957 re: the easy transition to club soda (carbonated water) with lime.  It's a little extra work, but I have found that I don't get carb cravings like I do with diet soda.  I plan to transition to water-without-the-fizzy sometime soon...maybe.

"???Club soda is created by infusing water with carbon dioxide.  Although the carbon dioxide provides an effervescent carbonation, it only slightly alters the nutritional content of the beverage.  While club soda typically has a different amount of minerals than regular still water, other nutritional differences are negligible.  Because of this, drinking club soda is a good way to keep your body hydrated..."

I read that on livestrong.com, so it *has* to be true. :D

I get it. I struggle too, and every off season put on weight that it gets harder and harder to take off for race season.

In re-reading my post I sounded harsher than I should have. Apologies.
