Subject: Road bike for 10 year old - 650c or 24" wheel

I keep missing them by a few minutes on here and my ebay luck is horrible.

I am the soon to be proud stepfather of a 10 year old boy who is doing so well in his triathlons, that I want to reward him with a real road bike. This is all he wants for Christmas.  I wish I would have realized that finding these small road bikes is tough.

I would prefer a 650c bike with a pretty small frame - standover 26 - 27", but at this point would even go for one of 24" wheel bikes. I realize he will outgrow that pretty quick.

If you have anything like this that you want to unload please contact me. If you have any leads that would be great too.  No set budget so open to what I can come up with.

Thanks!!

How tall is he now?

lkct01234, at 5'3", got an XS Felt road bike with 650 wheels this year. It fits her well, and would still fit some one slightly shorter (with strategic stem replacement).

I'd go with the 650's over 24" any day.

I just bought my 11-year old a 650 Trek size 42 and it fits him well. Forget the 24"- too much trouble finding good tires and he'll outgrow it very soon if he's not already too tall for it. Believe it or not, the way I found mine was via a nationwide search of CL. You can also check ebay. This may not be necessary if you live in or near a large metro area, but the smaller (XXS) are fairly rare around here. You do, however have all winter to look and wait.

How do you do a nationwide search on CL?

I also think you should go with 650 wheels for the reasons mentioned here.

Kind of off topic, but the previous user asked.

I didn't know you could do a nationwide search of Craigs list until I found this website.  It explains it quite well.

Thanks for all the replies. I agree about the 650c wheels.  That is my first choice.

How do you do a nationwide craigslist search?

Exact same predicament here for a while. Unlucky with used bikes. I decided to go for a new one. I have learned that these rare gems hold their value nicely. I settled for the Fuji Ace 650. One of my LBS just sold me a 2012 model for $385 (same price as 2011). Only downside is they are on back order (manufacturer only puts these bikes together a couple of times a year). I should get it before xmas. The store would gladly buy it back whenever I never to upgrade to the next size.

I found multiple LBS carrying 2011 models (in store leftovers) on the mid atlantic/northeast area, but they wont ship them (Fuji warranty issues). In all cases it was a far drive for me. Maybe there is such a bike close to you. I basically just googled the bike and went into 10-15 LBS websites, and then called them.

Good luck.

One note: shifting in this model is not through brake levers (sti) but through separate shifters. This helps keep the price down.  Pluses and minuses. It is an advantage for the smaller hand riders.

Hey guys...if you GTS (google that ) you'll see several ways to search CL. This is one http://craigsnationwide.com/

Asa precaution I would only buy via PayPal so you have some sort of protection. Let me know if you have any problems in your search. You could also message me.

Best of luck to you both
