Subject: 1 race in each state

Ok so one of my fitness goals is to complete a race in all 50 states by the time I’m 50 (29 now).  The race can range from a 5k to an ultra or Ironman (preferably races that you do not have to qualify for), I just want to complete a race in each state no matter the length.  So I was wondering what race would you do in your home state or in another state. I have completed a race in 7 states thus far

  1. Florida – Nautica triathlon sprint (Though I really want to do the Disneyland marathon, but it will have to wait)
  2. Maryland- Chesapeake Man triathlon (ironman distance)
  3. Virginia- ASYMCA  5 mile sand run – Hardest race I have done to date
  4. New Jersey- Tough Mudder 12 miler
  5. Pennsylvania- Too many to name but will choose Philly ½ marathon
  6. Illinois- Men’s Health Urbanathlon 12 miler
  7. New York- Men Health Urbanathlon- 7miler

Next year I will add 2 more (Both confirmed)

 Arizona- Ironman

Delaware- Diamondman Half Ironman

I told my wife just the other night that I thought it would it would be cool to complete a triathlon in every state.  You've got a 10 year head start on me by I can add it to my bucket list.

South Carolina - Kiawah Olympic Triathlon

It's an ocean swim, nice flat bike on Kiawah Island and then part of the run is on the beach.  It's a nice course.

I have not done this, but it is on my bucket list.  There is also the Vermont City Marathon.  Good luck.

CT - Rev3 Quassy Rough course, but tons of fun!

Also - South Carolina - Knology PJ 5K - best value for a 5k race I've seen. Awesome food/prizes, flat, fast course with lots of support and pajamas!

IM70.3 Rhode Island is a fun race.

There are plenty of great events in TX but I'm partial to the tri in Galveston.

Idaho - Race to Robie Creek (The toughest race in the Northwest) and possibly the toughest anywhere to get into. Registration sells out within minutes of opening - I think it was about 25 minutes last year. I've done the race once and once is enough.

Well since there are already 2 South Carolina races listed, I'll complicate your life further.

I went to visit friends in the low country this summer and did a cool little tri called the Beach Bum. All elements on the beach. My current profile photo is from this event. Mountain bike on the hard sand after the ocean swim, then run on the sand. I did the whole thing in a pair of vibrams. Inexpensive race, well run.

-----

For bucket list events in the northeast, Vermont has a race just a couple years old that I hope to do in 2012. The Even Up Tri, aka Aquaman, aka the Kingdom Triathlon.

I hear there's a pretty well known race in Hawaii.

I'm slowly but surely working my way towards 50.

Done tris in 14 states now: CA, NJ, DE, FL, MD, HI, RI, NH, AZ, PA, CT, TN, OH, and SC and plan to do Wisconson (REV3 The Dells) and Maine (REV 3 Old Orchard Beach) this coming year. I want to someday to do a tri in all 50 states. I've also done Tris in England (IMUK) and Canada (IM Canada).

I have also done running races in MA, VA, ID, and NY . So my total for any type of race is 18

X2. Hard to get into. Unique in so many ways including start and aid station with beer, epic course and fun party and miserable school bus trip back to start.

For Oregon, I'd suggest any of the races with the pacific crest sports weekend in sun river. Awesome courses and everything from 5k to 70.3

Have to give a shout out to Iowa.

Dam to Dam Classic- 20k

This is by far my faviorate of all the races I've done in the past three years and has become an annual event for me. Race is capped at 7000 and usually fills up in a few weeks but well worth it.

In Colorado, I'm slowly working on the same thing.  Been to TX, NM, MN, CO, CA, OR, GA, WY,FL,NE.  Will probably try to get 2 more this coming season.

In Colorado, I would say Triathlon:  Do the Boulder Peak.  Olympic tri.  Now part of the 5150 race series, but has been a local staple for years.  Sells out quickly.  If doing a bike ride, the best is the Triple Bypass.  Ride over 3 mountain passes.  From Evergreen to Vail Colorado.  Great ride, great support, and one heck of a day.  Probably at least 8-9 hours, but worth it.  It is killer.

Good luck and just keep pickin states off.

Washington I would do Bloomsday, 12k, 50,000+ people, live music and one really fun (steep) hill.  Good times.

For North Carolina, any Set Up Events race.  I'll go ahead and say Beach to Battleship half or full iron distance.  Wetsuit swim with the current, fairly flat bike and run.  Can be a PR course, if you are into that.

Don't plan on doing a triathlon in every state (too much to fly a bike) but I am working at a marathon in every state (doubt I will get all 50 but won't repeat a state).  We love to travel to a race, makes training/race day much more fun.

Some recommendations:

I know you said tons for PA but you have to do Run for the Diamonds in Berwick PA.  3rd longest running race in the US and course is exactly as it was in 1908.  Best small town race I have ever done.

Here are some local recommendations:

SC - Cooper River Bridge Run.  Yes it is huge (35,000) but it is also the most fun you will have at a big race.  We do this every year then spend the afternoon on beach.

NC - Krispy Kreme Challenge. So much fun.  So many calories.

Another Iowa option:  Living History Farms (7 mile off road running, very fun and muddy)

I am struggling coming up with a good Minnesota suggestion.  I think our best race is the Twin Cities Marathon, but there are sure many that I have enjoyed.  Anything offered by these guys has great giveaways:   Team Ortho

I've been busy looking at other countries and continents.   Good luck!

If anyone needs Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri I found a race that covers all three in one go.

Its a 172 mile bike race, they have solo category, 2 person team/tandem, 4 person relay, etc.

I was thinking about going for it solo, or maybe my tri team would want to do it, but if that happened, I'd be the slow guy on the team lol.

Last years winners was 10 hours for solo, and 9 i think for the 4 person team, I was thinking a good team of tri folks could do it in around 7-45 or better, everyone take there time doing a leg to the next check point, repeat.
