I needed a bike repair stand. Being both mechanically minded and cheap I decided to build my own.  $30 worth of ABS piping, elbows and Tees + pipe cement, hack saw blade, and 2 band-aids went into the project.  The end result was a complex device that ends up hurting both the owner and his bike as it tips awkwardly over at the worst possible moment. As for being mechanically minded and cheap - it turns out I am more of the latter than former.

Tomorrow I am going to the store to buy a proper bike stand.

...but I could save a few bucks if I just weld on a piece of angle iron on the base and to stabilize the unit...

Too Funny.....

Oh right...Then stub your big toe on the angle iron base you forgot to grind down after it started to rust, got it infected and found you couldn't ride or run for weeks, let alone the Tetanus shot you had to get from the doctors office......

Yes, I too am mechanically DECLINED - but at least it worked in my head! Laughing

I really like that design. I googled around and found the same design but with better photos here: http://www.singletracks.com/blog/mtb-repair/how-to-build-your-own-bike-work-stand/

This design should work great but the pipe-clamp attachment is too risky to use on a tri bike's carbon fibre aero seatpost.

Anyways - here are some photos of the finished product. I made it stable and added some features like the parts and tools box and a wheel hook.  Total cost was around $35 and 2 hrs.

I made the benchtop model and put it on an old Workmate bench I had in the garage... to be honest I don't clamp the bike in the top anymore I simply hook the bike on the front of the seat... works great for what I need... Laughing
