Subject: Swapping between my road bike and tri bike

To increase my time on the bike I will be riding to work more often.  I normally use my tri bike for my commute thinking that I may as well ride the bike I use for races.  However, I have also have a road bike that is probably safer to ride in traffic.  I also keep Gatorskins on the road bike to reduce flats and have rear mounted paniers for my change of clothes.

Since the bikes are different geometries, do you folks think it would hurt my training if I use my road bike (trek 1500) during the week and only use my tri bike (cervelo p2) for my long weekend rides?

As long as you're getting plenty of time on whatever bike you'll be racing on, don't worry about it.

The more time in the saddle, generally the better imho.

As you know, many people start with a road bike and then progress to a tri bike finding they gain anywhere from that .75 to 1.5 miles per hour in speed.  I'd think that philosophy would still apply here.  If you make gains on the road bike, they will still transfer to the tri bike. I'm sure someone will point it out, but I don't see how you'd lose fitness on the tri bike.

I'd want that tri bike saddle time for the ability to stay aero longer and build the neck muscles to hold that head and helmet up!

The saying goes "time in the saddle" for a reason! It all helps tremendously.

I used to think it was important to spend as much time as I could on my tri bike. Over time, I've found it didn't really matter all that much. For the winter, my tri bike is locked to the trainer, the road bike will be used for any outdoor rides, and I spend a fair amount of time on a spin bike. All of it seems to help my bike fitness. I would think in your case the roadie would be a better choice for commuting...

You're still getting regular rides on the tri bike, so it should be ok. These should also tell you if more tri bike time is necessary. Also, both bikes should have the same (or similar) hip angles. The road bike riding will help more so if this is true than if it isn't. In any case, you're still riding, so it shouldn't hurt you.

For the winter, I ride with friends a lot, so I'm exclusively on my road bike. As I get closer to my races, I'll switch to the tri bike so that I'll have plenty of time in that saddle too.

Whatever is safe is the way to go I think.

Lots of cars...hands away from brakes = potential down time from training as a result of being hit by a steel box...

I too have put away the tri bike for my winter base. I find that I want to ride it too fast and that its just not comfortable to hang around in z2 in aero position. It is also safer and more comfortable to ride my "beater" roadie especially with limited daylight hours in the winter and people going crazy during the holidays.

I'll also add that my bike speed increased this summer when I started replacing some of my rides with hilly xc mountainbike rides.

I do all of my outdoor riding on either my road or my mountain bike. Only time my tri bike hits the pavement is in races.
