Hello all,

Just started training again almost exactly one year ago after 25 years rest (swam in college).  I decided I needed something to break up the boring swim sessions so I bought a bike and did 5 sprint tri's this past spring and summer.  I have now set my goals much higher and have started the 20 week training program for a 1/2 ironman.  I have decided to make the program a 40 week program and I have doubled up each of the weeks.  Not sure if that's going to work all the way through the plan but I will make adjustments.  I feel pretty good right now and realize that September 23rd will come up very quickly.  I have decided to do Deer Creek Challenge near Columbus, Ohio because it fits my 40 week schedule pretty well and I hear it's a very flat course.

All my training is indoor right now, really don't have the money to buy high dollar training gear for outdoor biking or running so everything will be different when spring comes.

Larry's official intro!

Hi Larry, welcome to BT, and congrats on your tris and lofty goals!

Sounds like a very doable plan, and that's a fair amount of prep time for a half. Good luck!

Welcome Larry.  Deer Creek is a good triathlon, well run (though 2008 was the last I did it).  Sounds like with a year of sprints, you will have no problems building to the 1/2 IM.  Just make sure to take breaks when you need them - both physically and mentally...40 weeks building to a HIM is a long time to maintain focus...wouldn't want to get burnt out before Spring gets here.

Good luck!

Thanks Ron and TriAya,

Training is going great and is really a nice break from training for swim competitions so I can't really imagine getting burned out.  I compete tomorrow in my last indoor tri of the year after truly doing some pretty tough running and bike training.  The only issue is that I came down with a cold on Wednesday so my expectations aren't real high for this one.

Ron, we specifically picked Deer Creek because we heard it's flat and I'm hoping the water isn't too choppy.  I did the swim portion of a half iron relay at Tawas (Lake Huron) in 2010 and the water was 58 degrees with 2.5 to 3 foot waves, NO FUN.

Started out 2012 training by doing what I'm calling a 1/4 ironman.  Swam 1100 yards, biked 28 miles, and ran 6.55.  Felt pretty good.  I was just recovering from about a week of flu or other such virus so my stamina wasn't great but I did it in just over 3 hours.  All of this by the way was on indoor equipment.  September 23 half ironman here I come!
