Subject: Where to get small bike parts

So now that I'm really starting to get into this bike wrenching hobby a little bit more, does anyone have any good websites that I can pick up limited life parts for cheap. Usually I use the major sites; performance, nashbar, trisports etc, but for small parts they are a bit spendy, I think. $6 per cable etc.

 

Anyone know of any good places to make a small stock stockpile of shifter cables, brakes cables, housing's, cable ends, chains, etc, etc.

Certainly there has to be somewhere I can get some of this stuff in bulk.

Have you tried one of your local shops?  I know we sell cables for $4/ea, housing @ $2/ft, etc...

Well that is certainly a choice, but I didn't want to be that weird guy coming in once a year fo 20 or so of each cable and the jumbo jar of 100 cable ends.

I think they would prefer this to you buying off the internet.  Just don't wear any triathlon-specific clothing, and you should be fine.

My LBS doesn't seem to care that I buy small parts from them without also getting service work.  I think they like the business, whatever form it is in.

Seriously, though, pieces/parts and service are the bread and butter of a bike store. Buy 'em from there and don't feel anything but glad it still exists for you to buy from

Why not? When you really eff something up and bring in your bike they'll already know you as someone who supports their business.

Buy from your LBS if possible.  If not, try www.aebike.com.  This shop seems to have every imaginable small part for a bike.  I once bought an 8 speed Campy cassette from them.  They were the only place I could find that part.

Particularly oddball stuff that my LBS doesn't stock and would have to special order.

You know those little spacers that go around the cable to protect the frame?  I went with my husband to pick up a handful the other day.  Talk about small, we were afraid we'd lose them before we got home!

It worked out for the LBS, though, because I but expensive all weather panniers on a whim.   Darn it.

I always try to hit the LBS for this kind of stuff.  Failing that, Pricepoint.com is a good place to order some of these things in semi-bulk (25' rolls of housing; jars of cable ends; 10 packs of cables).
