I'm HERE! and all checked in. Not sure what tomorrow's plans will be. Depends on others in my group. If it stays cool I'll be wearing a Desert Sharks Tri Club jacket.

That sucks you got in so late.  Hopefully the beer helped you get to sleep at a decent hour.

Jeez, I hate being a downer.  I so do.  But the weather forecast has gone from "very windy but manageable," to downright scary, and maybe unsafe.  30-40 MPH, with higher gusts, and rain.  Methinks the swim is looking more doubtful today.

Ah hell with it.  Let's have fun, everyone.

yeah very high winds till what tomorrow around 6pm?  I mean what it that? Winds die down after everyone is done swimming and off the bike? Oh well.

Thinking either veterans or clock tower for a brief swim today.

I thought of another tip.

If it is going to rain, I recommend putting a clean pair of socks in your T2 bag. It costs a little time, but it feels amazing. Also, you should put everything in your T2 bag inside a zip lock bag because if it rains it gets wet. In 2009 when it was pouring rain, I put socks in my T2 bag and didn't use a ziplock so they were soaked. They were still cleaner/dryer than the socks I had on so I changed them and even that made me feel better.

Well that got a bit ridiculous today. Bike course cut short by 41 miles. Still managed a 3:08 on the short course which I was pretty happy with, apart from the swim and 45 degree air temperature for 1.5 hours before the swim. I cramped really bad about 3/4 of the way through the swim which basically stopped me dead in the water for a number of minutes. Couldn't feel my hands/feet through T1. Averaged 22.3mph on the 15ish mile bike but was held up both no passing zones (one which made no sense to have and most people just blew through). It actually cleared up about 10-15 minutes into the bike on the portion of course we did ride. Hit T2 and had about a 2 min transition (watch says 1:45, chip says 2:32). Continued to have no feeling in my feet through about mile 6 on the run. Ran a 1:37 which I was happy with considering the numb feet and then shooting pain in my foot from mile 10.5 till after 12 (the numbness might have been better for me).

I'm really questioning if WTC/USAT will extend the race contract with Boise given the horrendous weather or water temperature issues they have had in 2009, 20011, 2012. The biggest problem is, pushing the race back gives you potential for 100+ degree weather. I guess we'll see in a few months.

Great job PeteDin!  I've never cramped like that after a swim!  Also the 1st no passing zone I got caught in a crack in the pavment and thought I was going down, but was able to right myself at the last minute.  I also couldn't feel my feet forever on the run Mile 6?  Either way it in my mind it still ranks as an IM race.

Way to get the job done!

Other than the cold water, weather was not an issue in 2011.

Ouch.

Turned in a 3:02:16 today.  At the swim site I seriously considered not doing it at all -- like something out of a nightmare.  People were shuddering uncontrollably before they ever got in the water.  It was a little scary, I thought.

Swim -- 38 and change.  My hands were frozen by the wait, and couldn't get a proper pull together for most of the time.  And I really need to sight better.

Bike -- 36 and change.  About 23 MPH, methinks. (The website says we went 12 miles.  We didn't.  It was 15-ish.)  On the no passing bike path I and about a dozen others got behind the lone female 70-74 age grouper.  Bless her heart, but we went  about 8MPH or less for that little stretch, and it got on our collective tightly wound nerves.

Run -- 7:35 average pace for a 1:39.  Not pleased with this, as I'm a pretty strong runner.  Need to figure out what went wrong here.

And, by the way, I'm not upset about the shortened bike.  I think the waiting around in the cold took a lot out of me, and it would have made for a very ugly run.

Nice meeting you, Pete!  Safe travels back to Washington.

Great race you two.  I was 3:22.  The swim was pretty crazy.  I had my time at 39 out of the water, but I slowed considerably to get the wet suit off half way official time was 41 and some change.

The bike was nuts.  People were weaving all over the place and my slicks were like riding on ice.  I think my time was like 39 on this, but it was pretty chaotic.  I think that section was not made for that many people at once.

Run started good, but I didn't get enough water on the bike so it killed my run. 1:54 was not great for how I have been running, but it is a race PR for me.

Sorry I didn't make it out.  I just wanted to get back to the room and warm up.

Great job everyone who finished.  That was a test of wills no doubt.  You are all official 29.3 finishers.......

Nice job there speedy guys! I haven't even looked at the splits yet. I know it took me 50 to swim (ended w/ my right hand in a fist and had major calf cramp). Had the longest.T1known not b/c of cold but the whole bag thing. Bike was.okay and run was 2:46 (I think, which for me is okay - I'm slow).

As some in my training group would say... "I'm too damn stubborn to ever throw in the towel!" ;-)

Good to here everyone gave it a go. A bit beat up today but last night I went ahead and registered for Lake Stevens so I can actually complete a 70.3 instead of the 29.3 we did yesterday. 5 weeks and hopefully some better weather should help a ton in finishing a half this summer.

What a crazy race! For some reason I could not buy my shuttle tickets online. So when we got there all was left were the 9:15. So that got us up there 3 hours early. And if you were there you know how great the weather was. we huddled behind the dumpsters for a while. Sat in a few porta potties finally they started letting people sit in the buses. Nice to get out of the rain and wind. I had already got into my wetsuit. Still about an hour or more before start. Finally a lady got on and told us they had shortened the bike to 15 due to wind and the SNOW out on the micron property. At first I was ticked. But now as I look back on it I think they made the right decision. I am sure many people would have gotten hurt. It was actually nice to get in the water, was warmer in the water than out. Kind of got a little freaked out as we were waiting for our wave start and they bring in a guy on the jet ski. Just shivering like crazy and could move to well. Oh well. After about 100 yards I was doing fine with the cold. Swim went fine. Actually better than I thought I would do. Transition went bad. I had so much stuff and without a plan and trying to decide what to do, I wasted lots of time. On the bike it was slick. I slid once and nearly went down, we were really packed in and it made it tough to pass anyone. The 15 went quick though. Just as I was getting in a groove we were there. Run was pretty good. Should be with so little bike. 1:48. All in all loved it. Had my sister and daughter there, was great to see them cheering me on. Now I have to find another to do a true 70.3. I am thinking I try for St. George maybe? Maybe Boise again? I hope they dont lose it. The volunteer's were great. Tons of support and well organized. Great place as well. I heard in the end it did sell out? Good for them.Finished in 3:33 ish. Funny, I ran a marathon 3 weeks ago in about that time.

Crazy day...looking back, I can't believe how crazy we were actually lining up to get in that water with air temps so low. I think it's safe to say that the water was semi pleasant after being stuck in the cold for so long. (Rode the early shuttle.) Watching people being brought back to shore shivering uncontrollably was a little freaky, but when you've got your mind on something it blocks out everything else, I guess. My swim was good...I was passing people, and my sighting was decent...well, decent for me :/ My time wasn't so great, though. 41:38 when I should have been closer to 38ish.

I spent a lot of time in T1...just wasn't thinking straight (for instance, wouldn't for down because I didn't want to get wet...meanwhile, I was already soaking, plus it was raining. LOL) and was putting on a lot of layers for that bike. All I remember about the bike is that I was freezing. (I'm an Arizona boy, for crying out loud!!!) The whole bike leg is like a dream to me; I can kind of remember parts of it, but most of it is blurry...It took me 44:00 to complete it, average of 16.6 mph which is extremely SLOW for me...extremely. I averaged 21 mph on my last OLY so this is a big drop. I'm not sure if its because the faster I went the colder I got, or what, but as you can imagine, I was very surprised. The run was great for me...nursing an injury and expecting to finish in 2-2:15, I was happy with my 1:52. All in all, a decent performance...I was very upset that they shortened it, but have to trust they knew what they were doing...I will do this race next year. I just hope they bump it back a couple weeks.

Sad Panda over here.....  Since I switched to a relay, I was in the last wave.  At 11:50 I was so cold I found the medical tent and sat 1 ft away from the propane heater.  25 minutes later and I was STILL shaking horribly and could not warm up.  I decided that the universe gave me 3 huge signs that I was not meant to do this race: broken heel, bike course cut due to high winds, hypothermia before I even hit the water.  Since I really had nothing to prove and I was already broken, I decided to hand my chip in.  It sucks, but it was the right thing to do.

Another deciding factor was when I was sitting in the medical tent, they were starting to bring in athletes.  It was flat out scary.  And they only had 4 heating beds and maybe 10 volunteers in there.  The medical people were PISSED that WTC didn't cancel the swim because they were not prepared.  In fact, they finally kicked me out of the tent (and the heat) because they needed the room.

It was fascinating to watch the pros get on the bike... they did not look like pros.  Several guys wore their wetsuits while on the bike.  Lots of them were fumbling to get their shoes on and nearly crashed.  One woman actually dismounted, took her shoes off her pedals, put her shoes on and re-mounted.  None of the pros were happy.

Good job to all of you gutting it out today!

Hi gang,

Well I saw and conquered, oi. That was some freak fest, I was absolutely shuddering with cold by the time my wave went, of course I had to take the early bus so froze my azz off for 3hrs b/f getting in water. I managed ok apparently swim was 37 and change, a smidge better than last year..don't know how, my finger were frozen and definatley not in the normal catch position. Getting out of the water was insane I was a frozen block, spent over 6min in transition which is not my norm, I usually waste no time but all bets were off yesterday, it was survival time. Got on bike but was shaking so bad I was afraid I'd shake myself off the damn thing. I went extremely slow down the hill so that had to have eaten and extra ~ 2min off my bike time, finished bike ~43. Spent another 4min in T2 drying my feet and putting socks on, another waste of time, I've been running sockless to avoid this time waste but again, didn't care needed warmth. Finished run in 1:58 which for me is good, I've dealth with a lot of achilles injury stuff and am only recently getting more consistent with the run but still struggle so I guess I'll just be happy with it. Oh my # for the day was 377 btw, the name is Deirdre, I just use Patsy online. Sorry I didn't get to meet any of you, I was woopin it up with my club at our "aid"tent, drinkin beer and eating burgers, driving wasn't on my agenda that's for sure lol! Hope to meet up with you next year, when the weather is right, it's an awesome race, I do hope they push it back a week or two though. Good job guys, it was a tough day all around.

Patsy

I can't decide if I should be proud of myself for sticking it out and swimming, or embarrassed that I was so stupid to swim.  Thinking about it now, I was hypothermic getting in the water.  I had several people ask me what age group I was in as I was walking over to the group of blue caps and couldn't remember.  Then once I was there and at the back of the group, the only way / easiest way to answer was to just point out the kid w/ the sign.
And then not long before we got in the water (think when the sleet was starting) I noticed my feet each had a purple blood splotch on top (one near big toe, other up by ankle).
Luckily, I generate a lot of body heat and warmed up fairly well once swimming, but near the end my right hand started hurting and I found myself swimming w/ a fist trying to get blood flow back into it.  As well, when I hit this dude that kept swimming sideways, I got stunned and my left calf cramped.

Not sure swimming yesterday is something I'm proud of :/

My swim sucked.  Per the official time 44 and change though my watch said 42 when I got out. I cramped in my left hamstring in the last 300 meters.  T1, had them strip off my suit which was nice. then I got the dumb brain idea to put socks on for what reason? I also got a dumb idea to put gloves on my frozen hands for what? To waste time in my transition.  Got slowed up quite a bit by people on the bike. Bike pace was about 18.46 though my bike computer said 19.5.  Run was slow by my standards as I had stomach issues with cramping on both side when I picked up my pace. I ran only a 7:32 average pace. I had hoped for about a 7:10 or better.

I'm also not sure that they had my time right for the race as the person that finished 2 seconds ahead of me was supposedly in my age group yet on his leg I saw his age of 44. Oh well.

Pete you said you signed up for Lake Stevens. I have thought about that but not sure I want to travel over to Seattle area when I could do something though not ironman a little closer to home. How is the swim course there compared to Boise? i thought Boise wasn't choppy at all?
