Never really thought of this until funding got cut, my pool used to be open daily 6am - 8pm. Now it is only open m-f 6am - 12pm and m-w-t 3pm - 530 pm. Basically only open about a third of the time.My question is why do we need lifeguards, thousands of hotels across the country have hotels with no lifeguards. It must be a liability thing, but if a hotel can operate without, why can't the gym?I have limited gym experience but the two I go to are like this, does everyone's gym require lifeguards or is it just mine?

My last gym did not have lifeguards at the lap pool.
It was a glorified unsupervised day care, and I felt extremely uncomfortable being the only adult in the pool while multiple children ran and horseplayed around. I would have MUCH preferred a lifeguard on duty so I did not feel responsible for other people's children.

My YMCA, on the other hand, has multiple lifeguards staffed at all times who actually enforce safety rules. Much preferred.

No lifeguards at my pool. (24 Hour Fitness) Also has a sign prohibiting anyone unde 17 from using the pool without a parent present. IDK how well it works, whenever I'm at the pool it is usually early in the morning or in the middle of a weekday and I'm almost always alone in the pool.

My lifeguards are all wrapped in blankets, huddled in a corner, playing on their phones (outdoor pools here).  Course they are also the ones that take the money for those paying, take the tarp on and off the pool, cleaning the area, and I am sure when it is not adult only lap swim time they are busy with kids.  Oh, and they turn the heater back on when it shuts off, hopefully before the water gets too cold.

I'm VERY fond of having a lifeguard around. It's mostly for my mental comfort, but there's always the possibility of that one time that something goes wrong. I've been in lots of pools that didn't have them, but I much prefer to go where there's somebody keeping tabs on things.

No life guards at Fitness USA, Bally, or LA Fitness.  None of them have kids playing, though...nor do they have deep ends (I think 5ft is the deepest I've seen)

I think it's always a good idea to have a lifeguard around.  You just never know what can happen in the water.

The lifeguards at my local gym are great. They know I just started learning to swim in October, and every time they see me practice, they say hi, sometimes they give me some pointers and advice if it's not too busy, and when I leave they thank me for coming in. They're also there walking around the three pools (lap pool, zero entry pool for kids, heated therapy pool) checking on everyone. They clean up the deck, and they enforce the rules, although I tend to go when the kids are in school. When it's busy and we need to go into lane sharing mode, they act as intermediaries and will match you up with someone they believe swims at the same pace. Then they politely ask the swimmer in the lane if they don't mind sharing. When a swimmer wraps up a workout, they often let the lifeguard know, and he or she has a good idea of who's been in the pool longer and gets their own lane if one opens up. I think having friendly and helpful lifeguards make it a great place to swim. I'd be pretty bummed going to a pool with lifeguards on their phones.

I don't know why I didn't think to add this in my response above, but I drowned in a pool as a kid. I'm sure glad there was a lifeguard there to bring me back to consciousness.

if gyms potentially have kids in the pool then I think they are obligated to have a lifeguard.  Though this may be a state by state rule.

My gym back in Boston only had a lifeguard on sunday when kids were allowed in.

Here in NYC every pool I have been to has a lifeguard.

If it's just a choice of lifeguards or no lifeguards, then sure, why not.

But I think the OP's real question is, if the tradeoff for having lifeguards is restricted pool hours, then do you really require lifeguards?  Suppose that due to budget constraints your pool could only afford guards for one hour a day?  Would you rather have the guard, or open the pool with no guards?

My gym has lots of signs saying there are no lifeguards but they do have staff around including people sitting in a lifeguard chair with one of those floatie things lifeguards use to save people during certain times of the day/year.

So I think they actually do have lifeguards but say they don't for liability reasons.

Other jobs guards do...
Chemicals
Clean unwanted body fluids/objects out of the pool (and shock)
Basic Cleaning (vacuuming, spraying down the deck, etc)
and obviously, respond to emergencies.

I work in a recreation center and can't imagine NOT having a guard on deck.
Kids aside, I can instantly think of two situations in the past year in which the guards in our organization responded to emergencies in the pool involving adults.

Would "I" get in a pool w/out a guard on deck... likely so... would I swim the same? NO!  I'd be MUCH more cautious and not push myself.

COMPLETELY agree w/ the comment comparing it to having insurance

I can definitely relate to the pool hours frustration! My pool is only open monday through friday from 6am to 9am and again over noon hour. To make matters worse. They close the pool altogether if, for whatever reason, the lifeguard cannot be there. I live 25 miles from the pool. Needless to say I call and make sure the pool will be open before every swim. I keep telling myself... "there must be a lifeguard to save the elderly."

You don't really need a life guard until you really need a lifeguard. The same way you don't need insurance until you need insurance. So yes, lifeguards are necessary.

I just got home from my daughter's high school swim meet were there were 3 lifegaurds on duty.  A pool full of accomplished swimmers surrounded by team mates and 300+ spectators and 3 guards watching from their chairs.  However, in the morning I'll swim at a health club with no guard.

My pool does not have guards.  It doesn't get much swim activity either.  We had a good masters style swim class for a while and I attended it, it fell apart n the past few months as the instructor took a new job.  The person that is covering that class isn't even a swimmer.  He puts workouts up on the white board and stands there.

Children under 15 aren't supposed to be in  the pool unsupervised.  Most people do abide by that.   However, if your kid is in the water you better be too, not sitting on the deck with your book, paper or cell phone.

Kids aren't taught basic pool courtesy when there aren't guards.  They wind up getting in the way of a lap swim.  We have 3 lanes set up just for lap swimming and the rest is open for the aqua aerobic classes minus the small sections for a kiddie play pool and a hot tub.

Do I swim in this mess?  Yes, at 5:45 in the morning when there are only other swimmers in the pool.  Going in at any other time of day means the water walkers and noodle ladies will be there.

My current gym, and my former gym both have pools, no lifeguards.  Both have signs that alert folks the lack of lifeguards.  In summer, there's lifeguards when the outdoor pools are open for kids swim hours.

Doesn't make sense to me why they need lifeguards for adult swim sessions.

Lifeguards can be pretty handy.. anything can happen. You want someone there who can pull you out of the water and preform CPR, rescue breathing.. etc. Just saying. then again I guess I'm kinda biased.. I'm a former lifeguard. we had a little slogan that said "we sit on ours all day to save yours" :D

I was a guard for 10 years and did very little beyond minor first aid and the odd spinal injury(usually due to the adjoining rink). But the one VSA (Vital Signs Absent ) rescue I did in 88 leaves me thinking that the insurance metaphor is worth a second thought.  I don't need a lifeguard...until I need one.

I forgot to add that this is a lap pool only, no kids etc. You guys are right that I will probably never need one until one isn't there, but then again if I did need one, would he/she know i'm in need and be able to see e over there lap top screen. It's kinda funny they actually have a desk for them to sit at vs a life guard chair

Ahh yes, and the pool in question in my case is about 5 ft at one end and 3.5 at the other.

I'm biased as well, former lifeguard and former pool operator (handled chems) and I prefer to have a guard around, not because I'm worried about needing one, my current pool is deepest at 4.5 feet, but because the pools I've belonged to are much better maintained with a competent staff around.  My old pool had a guard on duty at all times and I never had an issue with chemicals being off heater broken etc.  This past year at my new pool, moved to a new area, I've had to deal with a broken heater chemicals being way off and a broken filtration system that took weeks to fix.

I have been hit head to head while doing laps by a old lady who just decieded to hop in and swim in my lane while I was at the other side and I was knocked a little loopy.  I didn't need a life guard but if that lady was swimming any faster I might have.  Keep the lifeguards and thier $8/hr.  Cheap insurance against stupid people.
