You're back!

Let's see ---- there's you with your mom, and there's a photo with a sewing machine and some flowers and a nice quilt, so I'm guessing you're in Kansas now.  Yes?

Yes Im in Kansas, working on my marksmanship and getting whupped by my 72 year old mother who shoots almost daily. (she was a competitive marksman in high school and her father shot skeet competitively)

Ive spent my time since my disappointing marathon with some Sufferfest training, swimming and unstructured running-really feeling good running after about ten days post marathon.

Starting January 1 I begin a more focused approach toward an Olympic in April and a Half Marathon

nice that you can do Sufferfest stuff so soon after 26.2.  I think that speaks quite well of the volume you have built up to over the past couple of years.

Yeah, I keep thinking about Jan 1 as something transformative for me.  I have never ever been this slack for so long before, and it is now making inroads on my motivation.  It'll be interesting to see how my brain responds to picking things back up in another...........nine days (is all???)!

Yeah nine days. I'm looking forward to it, I have scheduled a heavy swimming week as part of my "rotating focus" plan for the season. Still formulating my focus beyond April 28, probably targeting an Olympic in September, a HIM if I feel it and can afford it.

Hearing hunters in the background has provoked an old itch for dove season, perhaps pheasant in the fall and moving stuff around in my house caused my bow to surface which caused other images to begin swirling through my head but each time that happens the Iron distance beckons as well, if I am not careful I'll find my old log book and suddenly want to fly again .....too many thing interest me

It's the same with me, and a big current aspect of my lack of motivation.  I not only have a bunch of current interests, but also several that go into a category of "I'd hate to die not having done ___________________" or a related category -- "I wish i had started _____________ sooner in my life!"

Counterbalancing those is triathlon, which has been my main raison d'etre since 2000.  It is probably the thing I have most consistently excelled at in my life, and it is without doubt the essence of my identity.  But sheesh -- I can't keeping clinging to it, can I?  Especially when other things beckon?  That's the crux of how I am viewing the next ten months or so.  I'll keep you posted!

(And FWIW..............I'd like a dime for every time in our relationship that you have mentioned flying.  Now, admittedly, that wouldn't get me much more than a grande coffee at Starbucks, but that's good for 19 mentions at a dime a pop, which is pretty accurate, i think, and also indicative of how much flying is a part of your identity.  Yes?

Aviation and to an extent recreational boating is something I grew up around, or at least on the periphery. My dad is a private pilot and it was "one of those things". It will come back around, a quick physical, a BFR, a check ride and off I go. In the back of my mind is the idea of retiring her at The Farm, owning a little airplane near by to "poke holes in the sky" with and pursue what ever else catches my interest. I suspect triathlon has me for a while, like pure cycling did for over 10 years. I do appreciate being in the shape I am and intend to at the very least keep a decent S/b/R routine of some sort going

I think I've said this to you before --- I hope you hang with triathlon a while longer.  You've learned an awful lot about yourself and your abilities over the past couple of years.......and it would be a shame to see that knowledge just gradually vaporize.  Of course, it's also knowledge that is not non-renewablle, meaning that lessons learned now can be revisited at some point in the future, even if there's been a lengthy hiatus from triathlon.   I think you've found that with cycling, whereas tricks-of-the-trade from back when are still in the memory bank.  Yes?

And is that what you've always calld it there -- "The Farm"?  Sounds pretty bucolic!

Happy 12/25, gang!

Those (Dave and Doug, is all?) with families around that includes more youthful units --- may all your age-appropriate gifts be well-received!  For those of you doing little else than sleeping in, and then a day's worth of random eating -- enjoy!

It's very slow here.  Jane is currently en route to Zanzibar and Tanzania on a belated honeymoon, and Peter won't arrive until late afternoon.  I'm sick, and expect not much in the way of loving contact; so sad!  My main job seems to be remembering to cover my mouth when I sneeze of cough.  I THINK I can, I THINK I can, I THINK I can!!

Stayed tuned for a biggish announcement in the next few days, okay?

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!!  Over the last couple days the hardest thing I've had to do is decide which kind of pie or cookies I want.

I got a "Challenge" bike jersey and a few other things that I wanted (another pair of Tri-shorts) and some good Tri reading.

Today, I went "Boxing Day" Shopping to see if I could find a new swim suit but the stores were so busy I'll go back early tomorrow to get them.

Steve - I understand Zanzibar is really interesting - let us know how your daughter likes it.  Hope you're feeling better and don't have any snow/weather to worry about.

I was disappointed to find that an event I was planning to do in June has been moved to Sept. 22nd when I'll be at a wedding in Alberta.  Darn!

MOJOS!!!

Wanna become "Twitchy Ones"??

There's a quite long story behind this, but I seem to have fully adopted a group in which I was initially only helping get started, a couple months ago........and I wonder (hope!) any of you might want to join it.  It is now in the archives, and is called "Fast Twitch Tri", started by quincyf.  The purpose of it is to help people who are ONLY interested in sprints and olys, but of course there are a few folks who are looking at half-irons -- maybe not too seriously, but still.

Let me know, okay?  I am off to Toronto for a couple of days, and will be back Tuesday evening.  Then we can figure out how to move forward.  But!:

I WILL NOT DISSOLVE THIS GROUP UNLESS EVERYONE HEADS OVER TO FAST TWITCH!!!!  Of course, if four of you decide to jump and only two stay, well, the "center might not hold" here anymore, "critical mass" might not be maintained.  (Something like that.)

All of you, BE SAFE TOMORROW NIGHT!  See you in about 58 hours!

A new group! That should keep you even busier Hope you have a great New Year's.

I'm not sure about committing to the new group only because I tend to be hit and miss as far as participation. I lurk but don't always jump in and I don't want to take up space if I keep that habit

Hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year. We're getting together with some friends and they only live a few blocks away so we don't have to deal with too many drunks on the way home.

I've been running 4 days a week with my daughters, a little biking and one swim since my IM. It's been a nice break and I mentally am ready for my new schedule to start!

Hello Mojo's,Haven't posted since June, plantar fasciitis and, Achilles issues, and bone spurs all in the same heel. Just starting to run again, still some pain in the heel. Have been pretty bummed out about it, got to where coming to the blog was insult to injury. Several doctors appointments, orthotics, but no magical solution yet and it's been 7 months. New year coming, hoping the foot comes around. I'm in for the Fast Twitch group.

Hi Gene, Good to have you back again.  Sounds like you're dealing with a trifecta of foot issues.  Bone spurs and plantar fascitis go together and aren't easy to deal with.  The orthotics should help but it still takes time.  What treatments have you tried?  If you're able to run great, just be careful not to overwork your foot.

Steve - I'd been wondering what was going to happen with the group.  I know how much it has helped me so I was concerned Mojos was fading away.  If Johanne is doubtful and we're pretty depleted in numbers it might not be very practical to carry on the Mojos.

I wouldn't mind joining the other group although I'm definitely more of a slow twitch type (unlike Fast-twitch Dave).  I think I prefer a larger group (within limits of course).

Johanne - Don't want to lose your input.  Hopefully you'll stay in even if you tend more to lurking.

STEVE - I was checking out the Twitchy group, and it looks really full. In the first couple of pages, there was talk of turning people away after 31 members and forming a 2nd group. Can we just . . . show up?

I really don't want to lose track of all of the Mojo's so I will plan on jumping in with the Twitchers. I'm going to join another group as well. I know, I know! I said I was bad about posting so it seems counterintuitive to be in 2 groups but I'll try to be better

A great year, you should be very pleased with the numbers.

The numbers are nice, I was dissapointed with my results in three of my important races this year but I had several really good B/c races. I had sort of a super secret running goal of 2012 miles and was on pace to get there until June.

Well, one really-Kansas was frustrating but it was a build race toward Redman, by the time Redman came it had lost allot of significance and I had pretty much cratered the last six weeks or so for personal reasons, but the Dallas marathon I had maintained good focus and good consistent training leading to it and arrived at the start rested and uninjured and I sucked! Ha!

On the positive side I had a PR Half marathon in April, set several 5k PR's down to 21:58 currently, got a good bike, moved up to 5th AG in one local sprint tri and the upper MOP in the others, one overall 5k win and several Ag wins/placings in the 5k distance

Really impressive numbers Jeff and Dave.  My calculator says you guys are fast!

My numbers are really good for me.  I definitely need to run more in 2013 and I intend to get faster as well but here's mine:

Bike   118H  33min   1670.2miles

Run     77h  51min    360.83miles

Swim  131h  58min  170562.5yds

My goals are really simple - to do more and be faster in everything.

Steve - I know the Twitchy's are short course oriented and I'm not really long course oriented but I'm getting pressure to participate in the Oliver Half and today I was encouraged to consider Lake Stevens 70.3 in Washington state (July 21st).

I'm not sure I want to do either one but I am weighing the pro and con.  I like the idea of Lake Stevens being a month later than Oliver to give me more time to prepare but it is two weeks after my commitment to the Penticton MedioFondo (92km ride - so not too hard).  I could do the swim in :45, the bike under 3.5 but I'm still really weak on the run and never tried anything over 10K.  Any thoughts - good or bad?  I haven't got my heart set on anything - just thinking for now.

---------->>>>>>>>  DAVE (who expressed concerns about numbers) - and all others:

Not really full.  Yes, at first it was mobbed and worrisome that way, but as usual with these groups, attrition is both quick and unpredictable.  We are now down to about 13 "regulars", and a few more "sporadicals".  I haven't checked in there to see who amy have re-appeared out of the woodwork.............but my guess is no one unexpected.

So!  The choice is all up to you, and if you decide to become one of the Twitchy Ones, post a brief bio per usual.  i will also provide a list there of the pages on which each of the remaining original twitchers posted their bios, in case you want to see who's who.

I will try to get back here later today to respond to a few posts from the past few days.  Quickly, I saw ones from JOHANNE, GEORGE, JEFF, and GENE!!!!!!  (In addition to Dave, of course,)

See you soon!

GEORGE -

Don't think of it as fast-twitch-as-in-blinding-speed, but rather as an appraoch to doing triathlon --- that is, short course vs long(er) course racing.  That was Quincy's thought when she conjured up the idea, but I can see how it might be confusing.  I guess the approach would be to learning how to incorporate more of your fast-twitch muscles (we all have 'em!) in order to optimize your short-course racing chops.

I hear you about Oliver and Lake Stevens and those vistas of longer distances, but don't let that sissuade you.  as I said a couple of days ago, there are a few people who are highlighting shorter races..........but eye-balling some longer stuff as well.  I know JOHANNE is doing Vineman 70.3 again..........and I suspect JEFF will be to another half-iron in '13 as well.  And besides, what's the penalty for being in a short-course group and sneaking in a long-course race (or two)?   Not much of a deterrent, I'd say!

See you on "the other side"!!!
