Welcome some input from BT'ers down under.

I plan to race IM Melbourne in 2012 and was wondering which might be a better experience in 2013 - IMOZ or IMNZ. Considering how fast these things sell out, I will have to commit the cash in early 2012. I am leaning towards IMNZ, but open to suggestions.

Thanks.

Hi,

Can't help you i'm afraid but i'd be interested in hearing any conclusions you come to. My first IM is IMNZ 2012 and if all goes well i'm considering doing IM Melbourne in 2013 instead of IMNZ - so although it's completely the other way round to your question but i guess the discussion is pretty much the same.

As far as commiting to IMNZ, it sold pretty fast for 2012...

Lewis.

IMNZ has pretty rough road surfaces from what I've been told... something to consider if that bothers you.  Melbourne is brand new so no idea there.

Well, I will see you Down Under on March 25th then! Have you posted in the IM Melbourne thread?

By IMOZ you mean Port Macquarie, right?

Ditto on NZ having really rough road surfaces--you get jarred for 180km from what I hear. Also, it's very hilly (don't know if that matters to you). But it's one of the longest-running IMs and is extremely well-supported locally, and people become deeply attached to that race, so it must be a very good experience. The course is also incredibly beautiful.

The roads in Port Macquarie aren't paved with gold either.  The long stretch on the coast rattled my bike so much that I lost some bolts off of my X-Lab.  They were tight (checked and double checked) and had lock-tight on them.

The course at IMOZ is fun, pretty flat, and fast, tons of crowd support on half the run, the other half is empty.  Bike is fast, swim was fine.  Finish line was like a stage at a rock concert.

I chose IMOZ over NZ because I wanted to take a vacation with my family in Sydney (about 6hr drive south) and my children are too young to do most of the things I wanted to do in NZ.  There was some cool stuff to do in Port Mac as well.

I went through Tri-Travel to find hotels in both Sydney and Port Mac, but was also working with them for places in NZ before I decided on OZ.

You might consider the weather as well. Few friends who did IMNZ complained about the cold. Port Mac is usually pretty windy, but the temps are fine, you just might get drenched as we almost did this year. Btw, in Melbourne all predictions go out the window,  'four seasons in one day' is typical.

What about Challenge Cairns as an Aussie option as well? It's an awesome course that runs along some epic coastal roads with nice surfaces and a few hills but nothing too drastic. The run (point-to-point) finishes right in the middle of town. Probably a better course than any of the other options, although I admit I haven't seen the NZ course. Unless of course you are commited to doing an official WTC IM franchise race, in which case Cairns wouldn't meet your needs.

Thanks. The Cairns option might be a better choice if my family can join me. Funny comment about losing your x-lab on the rough road. Same thing happened to me on IMSA. Towards the end I was beggin' to get off the bike. Thanks again for the input. Cheers.

just get into the first one you can (besides cairns ) as they will all sell out fast . WA sold out in 4 hours last year but sold out in 60min this year . melb sold out in 5min and i would say it would do it again . port sold out in 60 last year i think it will be in the 5-10min range ( all the ones that miss melb and locals )

Just another helpful tip:  Last year I didn't get into IMOZ but was told by the Tri Travel guys to contact the RD as they had spaces available for "international entrants."  Wrote the RD, he sent me a code to punch in, and I was in.

So if you don't get the one you want that may be an option for you before you try to get into a different race.

Hi,
i have done both races. the swim is better at IM NZ but the bike is much better at OZ. runs are the same, well i would put NZ a fraction a head. If i had to choose i would go to do IM OZ.

Flying Kiwi - 2011-12-23 4:58 PM Challenge Wanaka here in NZ is pretty cool too.

Pretty cool?  Wanaka is probably my favorite place in the entire WORLD.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE that town!!!  Cheap, awesome hostels.  Great movie theater.  Stunningly beautiful lakes and mountains. I would move there in a heartbeat.

This is officially getting added to my bucket list.

I had no clue there was an iron-distance race there. OMG.
