Ran my 5K today.  Wanted to PR in my final race of my 40s.  I missed by 40 seconds.  I could have done it if I had not negative thought myself into walking at mile 2.  I also did not push once I could see the finish, since it was still 1/2 mile or so away, walked 3 times with finish in site.  Guess I did not leave it all on the course.  I did peak at 184 for HR, so I did work hard avg was 163.

I hated having runners start in the front of the field of 600 and you need to dance around them in the first 200 yards.  Oh well....

There are races on Sat, but I think it would be a waste of money to try and run one to cut the 40 seconds.

i have looked back at race times before and thought the same thing...If i hadn;t walked through that water stop, or if I had not done this...  Overall, nice job on the 5K!  Keep it moving forward!

I ran the germantown half marathon on Sunday. Finished in 2:07:08, it was about 10 minutes slower than my PR on that course, but for not having trained for a half, I will take it!

I've noticed in my training there are times I can run (at least when I'm not rehabing) better, stronger, and faster in a training session then I could do in an actual race, particularly when we take all the factors into consideration. I'd say consider your fastest time you've ever ran a 5K distance in your 40s to be your PR. Great job on your run! You have a whole other decade in front of you to set goals and PRs.

Taking in to consideration your not training for that event, I'm impressed. Great job - did the "HAT" have anything to do with it?

Twink - 2012-03-20 5:08 AM Well done guys! Who has the next race? Laughing

My next race is really more of a fun event than a race. My wife and a few friends from church are all doing the Warrior Dash. We will be racing for fun and time will mean nothing to us, just a chance to get down and dirty!

I rode last night on the drainer to try an work out some soreness and even swam this morning, but I am still very sore.

Sorry to hear you are still sore.

Warrior Dash! I spoke to my friend's daughter (23yr) about the Dash. She is very ill right now so I told her if she did everything the doctors told her to do to get better I would set up a group with her next year. Its definitely a great cause and looks like a fun day for everyone.

10 days till my first tri of the season and longest distance ever!!  Biggest issues right what to wear a tri suit (1 piece) or top/bottom tri (2 piece)?  The distance is 1.5m swim, 69m bike, 9m run.

I have never raced in a tri suit before, so can;t help you there. But I am excited to hear your results. Do you have a time goal?

I dont have a overall goal time yet.  But right now Im shooting for under 35 minutes on the swim, 5:15 on the bike.  I have no ideas on the run, but to finish.

Don't you hate how your legs feel during that first run after a long race, but then love how they feel the next day?

For me - I can't stand the onesies...1) if I have to go to the bathroom, the whole thing has got to come off and 2) I have a long torso - so onesies give me a permanent wedgie...I'd go for the two piece. That's some serious distance you'll be covering...good luck!

Fairly good run this morning, however it generated a question.

I am slow, and I am running my first mile at my race split time, it is a little slower than my race first mile but not my much.

How do slow people do long distances at HR levels of range 1 or 2 and not 4 or 5.  Should I be going long on a speed walk?

I am not clear on what you are asking, but the only thing I can say that helped my running was to run more. I looked at your logs and only saw 12 miles of running in March and 7 miles in Feb. It is going to be hard to see type of improvement on 12 miles a month. I would think you would see alot more improvement if you were doing 12 miles a week!

So I would suggest that you build a stornger running base, then start working on speed.

I think the groups officially end in April, so I think we need to have one more challenge to end strong. So I am thinking about a core challenge.

What do you say that we comitt to adding a core workout 4 days a week?  Thoughts?

Hey all, I realize our board is pretty much done for this period and am really appreciated for everyones input. I am am still rehabing my calf but have been on a treadmill for the past week and still taking it slow. I'm hopeful to be back in full by the end of the month and back to the run. I realize my 2nd chance at my first HM wont happen in April, but I'd rather try and fix this injury right this time and avoid further re-injuring it. My 3rd chance at my first HM is now set for October, after my tri races are completed. Speaking of which, and as my last official question to the group for this forum:

Regarding training, I'll be following BT's 12 week olympic training program. I've set my 'A' race as my last race of the year on Sep 1st, doing an olympic. I'll be doing a sprint on July 7th, and an olympic on August 4th. My question being, would it be best to set the 12 week program to finish it for my 'A' race, or for the first oly in August, then just repeat the last 3 or 4 weeks of the prorgam for the A race. I'm pretty confident the distances wont be an issue now. I'll be putting a focus on my running following the rehab and have already exceeded the distances for the swim and bike (up to HIM distances) and will look to fine tune everything to get a respectable time. But this will be my first olympic/internatinal distance.

Thoughts?

Personally, I set all my training plans up for my A races. Any races I do before then will somehow work into that plan. I will use those races for tune ups, or a way to gauge my fitness and see what I need to work on.

Your A race is your A race, treat it accordingly.
