3 mile run this morning and a 2100 yard swim tonight. Swim went well... A little cramping in my feet that I was able to work out. Tells me I'm not drinking enough water and I'm not stretching nearly enough.

Did almost 5.5 miles today at under 8:30 pace which is good for me. Started cramping at the end though which did not allow me to finish strong as I would like.

An 8:30 pace is good. On my best days I can hold 8:30, but probably not for 5 miles. I like to think i was built for endurance, not for speed... thats my story, and I'm stickin to it. Great job.

Saturday's workout was a 2 hour ride followed by a 1 hour run. Ride went well, over a pretty hillt course. Temps were low 90s by the time I got back out for the run, with 70% humidity. That was tough. I kind of bonked at 3.5 miles, but slowed down and pushed through. Recovered enough to finish the last mile at 9:30 (downhill, thankfully). Nine mile long run this morning... It's much cooler at 7 a.m., and I'm on a flat river trail. Hoping for shade.

Great job on the bike/run!!!

I found out yesterday that the Air Force is sending me to Mississippi and then Texas for 6 mos this Thursday!!  Holy Crap have I got a lot to do!  I have a bad feeling that my training is going to slack off this week :-(.  Hopefully I can pick it back up once I get settled in next week.

Going to Keesler?  Traveling can be a killer on training schedules.  Pick your core workouts and let everything else go for a while.

Good luck in Miss. and Texas. That would throw my workouts out the door! I did my first open water swim practice yesterday. Only 500 yards (which I thought would be easy) but the waves, etc. made it more work.

Woke. Up with what I thought was a sinus headache or allergies yesterday. No voice left by the end of the day. Feel like somebody drugged me today. No workouts for me. Losing a bike and a run.

My first triathlon went well. Finished 22nd out of 67 in my age group (45-49) and 219th overall (out of 1300) overall. It was a beautiful day and I am definitely hooked! I am ready to get up and train tomorrow!

Lessons learned:

1. Don't forget the wet suit has velcro (I needed help to get it off).

2. Work on transitions more.

3. I thought I swam fast because only one person passed me but I can definitely improve on swimming based on my time.

4. I was about the same ranking in each discipline so I have room to get better in them all (which I already knew).

5. Train harder, train smarter, train for longer distances.

Overall, I felt like I went at a pretty fast pace for me but my bike was only 18.0 pace (for 12 miles) and run was 7:58 pace (for 3.1 miles). I had cramps early in the run. I feel like I need to be much faster on the bike but I have a road bike not a tri bike. I know I can be much better on running if I work at it.

Great insights. Your bike and run paces are pretty impressive to me. Have you done much interval training on the bike? It's something I always tell myself I should do, but then don't follow through with it. It can make a big difference in your times, though. Again, great job, and congrats on your first tri.

I'm finally over my sinus infection, and my voice is back. I've gotten two 7 mile runs in this week, but no swims or rides. We've still got a house full of company following my daughter's college graduation, but I hope to get back into a rhythm this week.

Jay, congratulations! That overall result is awesome, which says that there are a lot of fast 45-49 year olds. Way to go.

Thanks. I have not been doing interval training at this point but I have been reading about it so I may start doing it soon.

Did the Warrior Dash today which was a lot of fun. 3.5 miles with 12 obstacles and many hills. Finished in 31:18

They had one of those in Little Rock last week... I really wanted to do it, but that was the day of my daughter's college graduation.  It was a toss up, but I went to the graduation instead.

Did a tough brick workout today.  37 mile ride and 6 mile run... temp in the high 80s by the time I was done.  Hardest workout I've done in a while, but I finished it!

Wow...nice work-out. I need to start doing longer runs myself. I am pretty sore after doing the warrior dash and then digging plants all day yesterday.

Well folks I have to say that I had a thoroughly enjoyable triathlon weekend. My wife finished well in the Memphis in May Sprint triathlon (12th in her AG, after DNF in this race last year). I finished with an almost 13 minute PR in the Olympic distance on Sunday. Great weekend of racing, great event planning and post race festivities. It's race season! I love it. Training plan for IM started yesterday. Everyone stay healthy, train smart and have fun.  Let me know if there are any questions I can help you with.

It is a great event! Start 2 Finish Events puts it on and always does a great job. I actually met and struck up a conversation with Sarah Haskins' dad, who was there competing and he said he had not been around an event that gave so much back to the athletes as this one. You should come do one of the races next year. There are also several other BT'ers that participate in the races here.

Yes, down at Keesler for an Avionics school, then on to Wichita Falls, TX for 4 months for another school.

Thought I'd give a local duathlon down here a try today.  There was a MTB category so I figured I enter in that one since out west all MTB Tri's and Duathlon's are actually on the dirt and I thought I'd have a better chance of a podium finish.  I came out of the bike portion in first place (out of the MTB's that is), but then got passed by 3ppl on the run.  I thought I was doing good on the run because the first 2 miles i had a 7:03/mile pace and the second 2 miles was a 7:32/mile pace.  Guess that shows me what I need to focus on.  It was a fun race though.

I would love to be able to hold that kind of pace on the run.  Great race... congrats.

I'm hoping to do a sprint tri in a couple of weeks.  It just popped up on the calendar, and I'll actually be in town for it.  I've got some Plantar Fasciitis problems with my right foot that have me grounded temporarily, but I'm hoping to be back running within a couple of days.

I hope everyone's summer is doing well and racing season is in full swing. I am 4 weeks into my IM training plan and it is not too bad yet. I also was able to finally finish (a year after the class) my exams and other requirements to obtain my Level 1 USA Triathlon coaching certification. Kind of excited about that. Everyone train well and have fun.
