Subject: first pool session tomorrow...suggestions?

I've got a marathon in 2.5 weeks and since my knee is hurting slightly I thought I'd go ahead and get started with swim training.  I had planned to start in January after my marathon but I'm taking it easy with the running this week and I'm itching to at least do something.

So tomorrow I will go do my first official pool workout at an indoor 25m pool at my gym.  I've never been in there when people were doing "lap swimming" although I know that there should be free lanes available at the time I plan on going.  Anything I should keep in mind in order to not stand out as a complete rookie?

YUP...find the slow lane, let others pass at the ends if they are faster, start slow and don't do too much tomorrow (you could bugger your shoulders doing too much on the first day) and of course....Have Fun!

Practice peeing while swimming. It's a hard skill to master but will save you time in T1 After that get your breathing rhythm under control and be sure to continuously exhale under water

Really hoping that you meant to red font this....

We once had a thread here where some people actually ADMITTED to peeing in the pool. Yes really.

Eeeew.

There are two kinds of swimmers. There are the ones who admit to peeing in the pool, then there are the ones who don't.

So the workout went well and there was no peeing involved.  Got there when the pool opened and there were only 2 other guys there at the time (along with the lifeguard on duty) so I had my pick of the lanes.  I struck up a conversation with the lifeguard asking various questions and telling her my background.  So I swam for about 30 minutes taking a short rest between almost every lap (25m pool).  Wow my HR was high!  My breathing ended up better than expected.  At the end the lifeguard told me I needed to kick more as I was just pulling myself through the water with my upper body and I wasn't very flat.  I have lots of work to do, but you have to start somewhere I guess.

Laughing...since most of us aren't in the pool for more than 90 minutes...you'd think one might be able to hold their bladder long enough.

Back to the original question of first session in the pool.  Yes, find the slow lane and if more than two swimmers are in the lane, circle and let the faster swimmers pass you.  Don't be afraid in time to hire a Masters Swim Coach and learn how to be most efficient in the pool.

Lastly, leave the bike and scuba equipment at home.  Most pools won't allow you to bring this stuff with you.  Kidding of course!  Good luck to you.
