Subject: Teachers-Where is your IM tattoo?

Did my IM in September...getting the tat this week. However, I am (will be as soon as I get a job) a teacher. I want it somewhere that it's not totally hidden but somewhere it's hide able. I was thinking upper calf because I'm not much of a skirt wearer.

What do administrators think of tats?

I don't have one, but even as a teacher in straight-laced KS the administration doesn't seem to mind ankle tattoos as least. I don't think upper calf is too different. The main thing is to conceal it during the interview Laughing I've done 3 IMs and have considered a tat and have pretty much decided on the mid thigh (covered by the rare skirt, visible in shorts).

What about a small MDOT by your ankle? That is typically a safe place to put a tattoo if you're worried about being discrete.

My tattoo is on my right shoulder. Which works great if you don't ever plan on wearing a strapless dress or being in a wedding. If I were to do it all over again it would be on my hip.
Our school district requires all tattoo's to be covered at all times. I teach elementary PE and wear shorts the majority of the year so legs and ankles weren't an option.

I don't have an IM tattoo... but I do have a lot of other tattoos and have been employed as a teacher for 7 years.  I have a half sleeve on my right arm, a large piece on the inside of my bicep on my left arm, and another large piece on my left forearm.  Never been an issue for me as a teacher at all.

If I were you, I would get the tattoo wherever you want it... and just cover it up during the interview.  Once you get the job, it wont be an issue.

If my teacher had a tattoo and I asked about it, I'd think it would be sooooo cool that they did something like a triathlon. I might think my teacher was superman/woman!

If you're not going to wear spaghetti straps or cap sleeves, your deltoid might be a great place. All I can say is, I have several tattoos, and the only one I somewhat regret is the one on my back - because I can't see it!

I'm an attorney, and I wear skirts for jury trials, so anywhere on my leg/ ankle was out of the question. Mine is on my back, right side, near my hip.

I'm an administrator and I can tell you that evey district I've worked in (4), requires that tattoos be covered.  I have teachers in my building that have to put on band aids every day to cover theirs up..

I think it really depends on where you are teaching. Many of our teachers have visible tattoos, as do some administrators. However, in a more conservative district tattoos might not be allowed.

I don't wear skirts, but as my classroom does reach 100+ degrees at times, I do wear shorts and capris a lot. If I were to get the Ironman tattoo, that sucker would be going on my calf or ankle so it could be seen!

When you apply for jobs, look to see if the HR department has its employee dress code  or handbook available on-line. This should tell you if the district will allow visible tattoos. If it isn't mentioned the district can do nothing about your tattoo.

Congrats on the Ironman tattoo!

I am the teacher they featured on the nbc broadcast in Kona this year. I got my tattoo on my right calf. As the PE teacher, I can basically wear what I want and our administration is very supportive.

If it's that important to you to get your body permanently marked, get it where you want it. why compromise?

I teach 3rd grade & have a tattoo (not tri related) on my shoulder blade. 99% of the time it is covered up at work, but in the summer I have a few sleeveless work shirts that make it visible. I have never been given problems by administration and I have some other coworkers with more obvious tats. I think tattoos are becoming much more main stream. A lot of people I know have one or more. That said, I think the acceptance of tattoos depends a lot on the administration and the community. I agree that you should probably cover it up during your interview because, even though it has nothing to do with your ability to do you job, you never know when someone will judge you based on something superficial like that. And in this economy, why risk it?

I say on your right face check, and get the NBC logo on the left. This leaves room for x2 on your forehead when you do it a 2nd time. OH wait I think the Ford oval goes on the forehead.

Sorry Just can't understand getting a corporate logo tat

Wow Dave great contribution to the post!  Tell me where in the original post does it state " I want to get a corporate logo tat and I need you Dave to talk me out of it"?  Even if she does why would you care?  I feel sorry for you Dave.  She was looking for idea's and help and that is how you respond.  We can all hope that someday we will be as cool as you.

Then don't participate in the threads that suggest someone wants an mdot tattoo. That was easy. Shame you couldn't do it.

A teacher friend of mine (male) has one on his leg, inside above ankle.  Not an MDOT, but has 140.6 etc.

I'm not a teacher but I got mine above my ankle so you can see it when I workout but I can cover it up with socks or pants (or both) any time I want to.

I placed my 1 inch square M-dot on the backside of my ankle.  If I am wearing shorts, it is covered up when wearing ankle-hi socks.

If there is a serious possibility that a tat may not be acceptable in a job setting why risk it? It's hard enough to find or keep a job in this economy, seems like it is a bad idea to give anyone a reason to pass over you for work.

One school may not care, but what if you need to move? Want to transfer to another district? Take a promotion?

If you have to ask where to hide it, perhaps you should ask yourself if it is really worth the trouble.

One possible work-around:  get a blacklight 'clear' tattoo. Invisible under most circumstances, but there when you want to show it off.
