I don't know where to start. I had shoulder surgery to repair a 180 degree posterior tear in my labrum. I am not expecting to get cleared to run until sometime in March...but I was thinking I might ask if I could start aquajogging earlier than that.

I can't swing my arm, would that be a problem? I have access to a shallow pool, but could also go to a public pool if I need a deep end. Which would be better? What gear would you recommend (beyond the flotation belt for deep water if I go that route). Any resources on the web to help?

I suppose I could do aqua aerobics, but I don't have a flowered swim cap. If I do go that route, I understand it is customary to wear a lot of cologne?

Here's a great resource and training plan on it by Pete Pfitzinger, one of the running coaching gods ...

Personally, I've never used a float belt to jog with. I think the cap and cologne are also optional.

Please, people, those of us who are forced into doing this activity already feel a bit, well, let's just say 'one step away from wearing a flower swim cap'.  Can we at least call it aqua RUNNING?  Or 'pool running'?

x whatever on the Pftizinger thing.  The secret is to go HARD.  If your legs aren't burning by the end, you aren't going hard enough.

Water Running can be a good substitute for the road until you have Dr clearance.  I don't know if this is against the Aqua Jogger rules, but I run with my hands in front of my body, on top of the water, sometimes in the water to stabilize my upper body.  I've been know to drift off course badly.

Definitely go deep and use a flotation belt strapped snug.
I swing my arms a lot but I'm sure you could modify to meet your needs.

Like someone else said, a lot of swimmers get annoyed by joggers (or anyone in general not doing what they are), so be sure to claim your lane with confidence.

I wear a hat or visor and put my iPod up there so I can listen to music. Works well.

And don't forget the shower!

I did a sprint where the swim was shallow and every breath you could see the aqua-cheaters and there 1:05/100m effort. Turns out a teammate was one and will never hear the end of it. I could give you his home phone number

If I could run a 1:05/100m in the water, I would totally do it.Cool

Oh, I never pay attention to that silly rule! Should I?

Totally agree. And wouldn't feel bad about it. Maybe.

I am a big fan of the Pfitz plan. And also believe the belt is the way to go.

Bumping this back up...

anyone have any feedback on specific belts? How about the shoes you can use with them? Are they worth the expense?

I know, right? They have these floaty shoes that are supposed to better simulate running. My take on them is that they are unnecessary, but I thought I would check around to see if anyone loved them. I'm definitely going to start barefoot.
