Subject: what did you learn in 2011?

What did you learn on this year's trip around the sun?  Triathlon or significant non-triathlon related.

I learned that if I follow the advice I give my teenage kids, it works better for me too.  Eat well, get enough sleep, don't stay up too late, make sure what you need to get done gets done, do your work first, play later, and so on.

Earlier in the year, I learned that new aerobars, new seat, and a good fitting could really help my bike performance.  I thought I was happy with what I had, but I didn't know what I was missing.

I learned that big athletes can be really really fast, and when they lose weight and maintain power they are even faster.

You can buy "free" speed on the bike.  Training harder will make said free speed even speedier.

Swimming less results in comparable race swim times but exiting the water more fatigued.

"Run lots, mostly easy, sometimes hard" is truly free speed.

Trying to do and win every race in a 100 mile radius will lead to a crappy end of the season.

After training for a marathon, then doing a mediocre job of training for a HIM, that training for a full IM will be tough.  Also that even a mediocre job of HIM training can yield positive results in OLY distance races.

I also learned that you can be quite competitive on an entry level road bike with clip-on aerobars.

I learned that race wheels and good, low rolling resistance tires and tubes do equal "free" speed on the bike.

When the RD keeps stressing over and over again that this course is not for wimps, at some point it is best to just believe it.

The two biggest things for me were, proper nutrition on race day is very important and running barefoot, or with Five Finger Shoes, made huge improvements in my speed and running form but, ultimately isn't for me as a day to day running format.

I learned that I should never, ever consider myself slow - no matter what and that after stressing about training properly the best thing you can do in a race is RELAX.

Oh, and that sometimes the best thing you can ever say is said by a hug.

I learned that one a couple years ago

I did learn this year that more than about 3-4 cookies now give me a royal headache from the sugar. I'm considering mourning my inability to eat them any more.
