I am 60 years old and new to the sport. I have joined a local triathlon club and have been training for several months and as with many, the swim is a challenge. When I started, I could barely swim 25m without stopping and now I can do 75m, but it is definitely hard work.

I am hoping to meet other 60+ athletes here to learn from.

Hello and welcome.  What part of NJ are you from?  I grew up in Old Bridge and lived for a few years in Marlboro.  Now I live in VT.  This is a great place to learn.  Good luck and check out the Mentor groups.  Ask lots of questions, there is a wealth of information and talented people that visit these forums.

Great job! Keep up the good work and stay positive...

It is common for people new to swimming to experience what you have as there are a lot of moving parts and it is very technical. Apart from getting in the water as much as possible (frequency is key; 3-4+ days per week), it seems like you may need to work on your breathing a bit.

This is one of the hardest aspects for beginners to master when learning to swim. Make sure you only exhale under water (slowly blowing bubbles) and only inhale above water. This may seem obvious and very simple, but once you can establish a proper breathing rhythm things will start to click and you will find that you are less winded after swimming a few laps.

To practice this, some athletes find it helpful to stand (or walk across) the shallow end, dipping their head/face under the water and fully exhaling and then inhaling above the water. Others find it useful to watch YouTube videos for visual purposes.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. It sounds like I will need to increase by swim volume.
