Subject: Races for 2012

Hey guys!

Wanted to stick my head into the Maryland forum after introducing myself in the main one. I'm a newbie - I did my first local Tri in Frederick over Labor day - but I'd like to do more. Do you guys have any recommendations for good (and RELATIVELY cheap) races between June and September?

I'm signed up for the Frederick half-marathon in early May. It's the longest race I've aimed for, and I'm SOOO looking forward to it!

I looked at the DC tri, but that's incredibly expensive (like close to $150!) - is anyone signed up for that? Another recommendation was the Ocean City Triathlon, but I can't find out any information about it - does anyone have any insight?

Are there any mentors from this area in the mentor program?

What races are you signed up for in 2012?

Thanks!

John

Look at the Columbia tri series which includes the Columbia tri in late may, Eagleman, and many more. They are all really well organized and well worth the entrance fee

Welcome to the Maryland board!

I'm having a run focused year, so I have all road running races scheduled for this year.

Check out trifind.com. Offhand, I can think of:

Cascade Lake http://www.piranha-sports.com/Race176.aspx

General Smallwood http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=1712

Diamondman http://www.piranha-sports.com/Race184.aspx

NorthEast http://www.piranha-sports.com/Race184.aspx

Also, once it warms up, the MDBTers meet at Sandy Point State Park to do OWS together.

Welcome and good luck !

Welcome to MD BT land!

There are some fantastic races in this area, but unfortunately the logistics of putting on a big event in this area means that the most popular events aren't cheap. Events like DCTri (June) and Nations Tri (Sept) are very well run and in iconic settings, but pricey. The various TriColumbia events are run very well indeed, but almost as expensive. The Columbia Tri (late May) is probably the premier Olympic distance event in the region, and it tends to sell out, but it's a tough course. Their Celebration Tri (late June) is billed as a sprint, but it's long-ish on the swim and run portions for a sprint tri. If you're looking for less expensive and lower-key events, then you might check out the series that Racine Multisports in Hagerstown organizes. Also quite well organized, though much smaller. I did my first multisport race with them, and really appreciated the low key aspect. Ken Racine also organizes some OWS practices up at Fort Ritchie (in the Catoctins) when it warms up. Those sessions are in a calm and shallow lake, so a bit less intimidating than hopping in the Chesapeake at Sandy Point (though Sandy Point is *great* once you're comfortable with the waves).

The current issue of RunWashington (available free online) has a feature on Tris in the area.

Consider the South Carroll "Tri-to-Win" sprint. It was my first race and still my favorite. Relatively cheap, especially if you fundraise (it's focus is a charity event, hence why I like te race and atmosphere so much).

Wow - thanks for the great responses! It looks like there's a bunch of great races around here. I hadn't thought of the logistical aspect of putting on a race as contributing to the cost, but I guess it must.

The series in Hagerstown looks very interesting, and I'll keep an eye out for some of the OWS coming up. I USED to be an excellent swimmer when I was a kid - my parents called my a fish - but it's been a long long time and I could do with some practice beyond the pool.

Thanks again guys, I hope I can be an active and helpful member of the community!

John

Even though the DC and Nation's Tri are somewhat expensive, if you're local to the area, and don't have to spend an overnight, they are really pretty good value considering the venue.

Hello and welcome MD BTER! along with all the races that everyone else has said, I would also look at piranha-sports (www.piranha-sports.com) which are in the Delaware area and they have lots of races throughout the year and are pretty fair with pricing and always well organized. They have a sprint distance in june called the "Tri it Tri" which is designed for beginners and its a nice, flat course. Also, Jersey Shore Multisport (www.jsmultisport.com) has alot of great triathlons along the jersey shore and they are well organized and family friendly. It is a bit of a hike but you might want to rent a place and make a beach weekend out of it. Hope you have a great tri season and welcome to the MD group. I am also doing frederick HM this year and looking forward to it.

Thanks guys, it's nice to look at some races based off recommendations!

I was wondering whether anyone had heard about the triathlon in Ocean City, MD in June. Apparently it's usually around fathers day weekend. I can find info on the 2011 race but nothing on the 2012 race. My wife's boss usually does it, but neither of us can find any info about it this year...

Looks like they changed the weekend this year. I was there as a spectator one year and it looked like a fun race. The best was watching the school of dolphin swimming towards the racers coming from the opposite direction.

x2

Plus, most of the registration fee is tax-deductible. Columbia Tri Assn is a non-profit and supports a number of local charities. Don't know if that's true of other local groups.

Hey everyone

Just introducing myself as a new Maryland BT.  I'll be training for my first sprint tri in May...and the DC Tri Olympic distance in June.  I'd like to meet some other local training partners to work on preparing for these events.  This looks like a great forum and I look forward to learning as much as possible.

Thanks all...

Dan

Welcome to MD BT! This is a great little state for doing tris and tri-related stuff.

(I'm waiting to pull the trigger on the DC Oly myself. I did it last year and really enjoyed it.)

Still trying to figure out my plans for this year.

Will probably stick to distances.

Would like to try some type of adventure race but can't find anyone else that's interested.

There are a few tris in the Ocean City area, I'm not sure which someone was suggesting to you, but here are the ones I know of in/near OCMD:

Assateague Assault Sprint - June 3, 2012.  http://octrirunning.com/events/assateague-assault-triathlon/

Ocean City Beach Patrol Sprint - Date TBD for 2012.  I registered to do this race last year, but the weather did not cooperate and it was postponed once, and then ultimately cancelled.  It was only $20 to sign up.  Last year it was mid-August, and being that it is vacation season they didn't want to close any roads, so (had the race actually happened) we would have had to bike obeying all traffic signs and lights and all that.  Just FYI.  Most of the participants were in the Ocean City Beach Patrol, but it is open to the public.  http://oceancitymd.gov/Recreation_and_Parks/Beach_Patrol/triathlon.html

Dewey Beach Sprint http://www.deweybeachtriathlon.com/

Make a Wish Bethany Beach Olympic http://www.tricolumbia.org/events/?eid=1

Osprey Sprint in Snow Hill, MD http://www.mdcoastalbays.org/osprey-triathlon (this is in early October)

For other MD races, you should check out the Maryland Triathlon Series: http://www.setupevents.com/?fuseaction=events&series=mts  I am planning to do Gen. Smallwood and possibly Druid Hill Park.

Good luck to you in 2012!

I'm echoing what some others have said.  For very well run races that aren't so expensive, try www.setupevents.com and www.racinemultisports.com.   They have some great races scheduled for 2012.  Another good one is the Half Full Triathlon in October in Columbia.  If you want a 10mile race before your half in Frederick, check out the racine site for a 10miler in March.  How about the SavageMan series in September?   Have fun selecting!
