jillian_o - 2012-04-20 5:14 AM Just read the update on the event website. I don't understand making the bike course short because of debris, isn't that what push brooms are for? I will volunteer before the race to help clean up debris if I have to............

Jillian - I,too, would be willing to "clean up debris" if it meant that we could bike and run the original single loop course!

I wonder if the course change also reduces the safety radius that medical professionals are responsible for covering.  In high winds I would suspect that cycling could be more hazardous, but not sure about running.

Perhaps water/aid stations would be challenged by the wind keeping water cups stable...  ::: sigh :::

How late does this race stay open for registration?  I am "or maybe" was planning to do this one next year to celebrate my wife and my 17th wedding anniversery where we spent our honeymoon in the French Quarter.

With such unpredictale weather "of which I would like the challenge of", and "don't think any part of a schedualed race should be changed, altered or canceled".  that's why we swim bike and run outside..the weather is what it is!!!,,maybe they should just move the "Entire" event to another day..Altering the event in anyway on the day of the race is not "the Race"  ....

The wind forecast is actually getting worse and not better.  I'm most likely bailing out.  I'll wait a few hours to make a final decision but a forecast getting worse the closer we actually get to the race is not a good thing.

Here's the latest National Weather Service advisory: http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=LAZ062&warncount... forecast I've been looking at is showing the wind getting better. 15mph instead of 20-25mph.

Anyone know why Bayou St. John isn't a viable option? Looks like nice water from google street view and is only about a mile or so from UNO.

I did not get any email updates.... What's going on? Where can I find the new course?

I absolutely understand that they cannot (fully) predict the weather nor can they control it.

However, I do expect that they will release more frequent updates, especially since there are people who are coming from abroad. I am extremely disappointed since this (was supposed to be) my first HIM. As One of you said before, if and when they cancel the swim, people will just not register next year. Personally, I would 1) never register to a duathlon 2) Won't spend 4 months training for it 3) Won't fly 5 hours to get to a duathlon race.

Just let us do the full race!!!!!

I agree.  That's why everyone signs a waiver..The conditions are what they are..Its supposed to be challenging not some easy experience...Why try to custom design it...We as athletes should be able to decide if we feel we are capable of doing it,,waves, wind, rain, whatever...

The wind Saturday/Saturday night is a much bigger problem than the wind during race hours.  The NOAA/NWS and Weather Underground forecasts have sustained mid to upper-20 mph winds late Saturday and early Sunday.

I'm about to get in a car and drive 6 hours each way and spend $1,500 on hotel/food/gas so I don't have time to be optimistic.

jillian_o - 2012-04-20 9:09 AM Don't look now, but on weather channel we are back to nice weather Saturday night going into Sunday morning with 15 MPH winds at 7 a.m.

But the NOAA and NWS (who I'd place more stock in than TWC) has this:

Saturday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72. Breezy, with a north wind between 15 and 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 58. Windy, with a north wind around 30 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 76. Windy, with a north wind between 25 and 30 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph.

Sunday Night: Clear and breezy, with a low around 61.

Honestly Im more upset about the shortening of the bike course. Even if there is a swim we are still not doing a full HIM because we cant ride an extra measly 4 miles. I would think they could add another 2 miles out on Hwy 11 before the turn around

I just cancelled my hotel reservations at the host hotel so I'm officially out.  Best of luck to those still doing the race.

PS - the host hotel is not charging the cancellation fee (it was waived for me anyway).  My guess is they have had an awful lot of cancellations.

http://www.nola.com/running/index.ssf/2012/04/ironman_will_begin_at_uno.html

"Race director Bill Burke said he is in talks with the Orleans Levee District to use the Southshore Harbor, site of the old Bally's Casino, to host all future triathlons. The harbor would protect swimmers from strong currents and not force organizers to cancel the swim when high winds are present"

A bit too late......

Please God don't cancel the swim.

I have been wondering about riding a disc also.  Not really sure what to do.  I have ridden it in windy conditions, but nothing like some forecast are stating.  Some show winds in the 20mph range, but with gust up to 30-35 or so, take your pick it depends on where you check the weather.  Anyway, I have no idea what it would be like to ride it in conditions with gust like that.  I may just end up riding 50's front and back.  I know you need to check your bike in on Saturday, but are you allowed to change wheels in transition on race morning?

I am planning on using my rear disc cover on my S60s. I used it on a training ride here on a day with 30 MPH winds to try it out and I was fine

Why do I have a feeling they will cancel the bike part?

This looks pretty (very) bad.
