Trying to prepare for the hills on the full marathon by training on South Mountain San Juan hills. I ran the 10K and half marathons in previous years  and thought I would try the full this year. I am not a strong runner at this point in my life, 69 years young. My last few full marathons have not ended well. My best full was the Marine Marathon in 2009 in DC. I usually bonk after 15-20 miles and finish weak. I am hoping to use what I learned the hard way during my triathalon experiences last year on nutrition. I will use GU Flasks and take some GU and water every half hour.

The Dutchman full is a tricky little course.  Starting up in the mountains, the first 6 miles or so are downhill, and people fly out of there at light speed paces (I did that last year and it ruined my day).  You have to stick to your plan and not get too hyped going downhill early on.

Kings Ranch horseshoe has its uphill section, and that can be a tiring portion of the race.  The 60 is relatively flat, but once you are at around mile 16-18, you hit a sneaky little uphill grade that you need to be prepared for.  it does not seem like much, but it can take it out of you before you hit mile 23-24.

Regardless, it is a fun race, and is much smaller than Chang's RnR, so it is easier to navigate.  Make sure you smile when you go through "the wall" - I was bitter by that point last year and my pictures were hilarious - all frown.  I will be back this year to get my revenge on the course.

Good luck, and hopefully it will not rain like last year!

The Lost Dutchman is a GREAT race.

A tip that I did last year, bring some extra wood for the fire. They have those little fire logs burning at the start. But if you bring some extra wood, you can warm that fire pit up a little.

Good luck to all the BT'ers who will be out at the Lost Dutchman races this weekend.

For those who are taking on the full marathon, I will be relaxing by one of the fires pre-race, likely in all-black with my ONE Multisport visor on.  My bib is #44 - say hello and we can high-five before the starting gun.

Let's do this

Good luck to all of you!  I'm sure I'll think of you while I'm running the IMS at the same time.

It was a bit chilly throughout, I thought.  The clouds rolled in and kept it from breaking 60 degrees.  But it did not rain like last year, and up at Don's Camp it was not too cold with the warming fires going.
