Subject: Weight Training while training for an Ironman
Hi Everyone,

This is my first post.

I ran my first marathon last fall and ran a half marathon this past weekend. I can't say I necessarily love to run but training for a specific event is quite fun for me.

A triathlon is a completely unfamiliar territory for me but I'm interested in mixing up my training. I would like to train for an Olympic distance and possibly a half Ironman for next year.

I'm curious if most of you weight train while training for an Ironman. I currently lift 5 days a week along with running 5-6 times a week. I enjoy lifting weights so much, I wouldn't want to completely eliminate it out of my routine. I was figuring if I were to train for an Ironman, I could scale back my lifting to just the compound movements and only lift 3 times a week.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can incorporate weight training into IM training but it'll be a larger time committment since you'll have to still do the same swim, bikes, and runs...no way around that unfortunately.

so instead of working out 9 times a week with swim, bike and running only, you'll be increasing that to working out 12 times a week so if you take into account a rest day you'll have a double stack each day...something that would mentally wear down even the most committed of us after 5-6 months...

something to consider...

I've incorporated weight training into my program this year, but it's only 2 days a week and I keep the sessions pretty close to an hour - doing a full body workout each time. I generally do a Mon/Wed session. Since I don't do anything else on Mondays (usually) I don't have to worry about doubling up weight lifting and a running or biking workout except on Wed.

Twice a week for me. I love them as they really help improve my other workouts.

Great. Thanks for the responses. Limited my weight training to 2 times a week is definitely doable. I could easily squeeze in a full body circuit training session within one hour.

I guess on the same topic, are triathletes who carry more muscle mass at a physical disadvantage due to more heat that would be produced from the muscle?

I don't know if it's an advantage or a disadvantage. I weigh about 165 right now, and I'll be closer to 150 once IMWI rolls around in a few months. But, I get passed by guys (and some gals) that look like body-builders all the time, so it seems to me that it's an advantage for them..

Unneeded body weight doesn't help. If you are body-building, then you are putting yourself at a disadvantage, if you are strength training then you won't necessarily pack on the pounds.

No weights for me....specificity of training seems a more logical approach to me.  I get my strength from running hills, biking hills, and swimming with "pull gear"...
