Didn't see a thread for this so thought I'd start it up. Will be my first HIM. Who else is racing?

I'll be doing this one! Third HIM, but first time for this race. A little curious what type of shape I'll be in that early in the season for this distance, but should be fun regardless!

I hope I can participate but not sure. We normally have a big BT crew and meet up for a meal or two.

If I can't race, I'll be there volunteering.

The bike course change last year makes the course faster. If you live close enough go ride the course. I find that area some of the best cycling in MA...scenic and not much traffic. I often drive down and ride and this past year figured out how to ride down there from my home and would do my 5-7 hour rides down that area.

Mike,

I usually park at Ted Williams Park (where Cranberry Oly is held) which is closer to 495 and then ride the route from the middle.  It is about 1/2 mile to get on the new course. Ted Williams is easy to park at and has real bathrooms that are sometimes open if not there are port a potties around the ball field that are usually spotless and unused.

There is a gas station about 2 miles from Cathedral Camp on the bike course we use if we need supplies or bathroom that is about half way around the course.

Truly a great ride and over last couple of years the really bad roads have been repaved and some are smooth as silk and oh so fun to ride on.

Kathy, I might do this one again too - still trying to figure out the schedule for the year! Used to ride the course every week a few years back when I worked up in New Bedford area.

How you feeling after IMFL and surgery?

This will be my first HIM too! I was signed up for the other Patriot's Half Iron in VA last September but injuries killed my season. So this year I decided to get it in early. I am making the trip up from PA since everything down here early in the season has serious hills (or is even earlier in the season and I can't ride outside in snow and ice). Would love to get some insight into the bike course if people have done it before. I probably won't be able to ride it ahead of time!

Fast and Flat would be how i describe it. Seriously, there are only rollers and maybe 1 small hill, it really is a nice flat course. I would read some of the race reports from members here, there were some good ones from last year that describe it well.

This is a great race, they do a wonderful job and everyone i have talked to loves this race.

Officially pulled the trigger yesterday. Lost last season due to a foot/ankle injury so I'm ever hopeful I'll be able to make it through the training to the starting line. I'm very excited!

Glad to hear the bike course is nice...I'm looking forward to it. Please let me know if anyone is going to ride the course ahead of time, I'll try to see if I can get down for a test run!

for those on the fence, this was posted in the Mass Forum from the Race director

Hi BTers,

For anyone else thinking of registering, yes, we will sell out and based on the pace of reg this year vs. last year it will be earlier... mid-March, if not sooner. Less than 250 spots remain (and only 4 slots are left for the Aquabike).

We'll be sending an email to registered racers in the next week with a few updates, but wanted to announce here that, new for this year, we are offering a Patriot Half Training Camp (fee required). Details are here: http://www.sunmultisportevents.com/Patriot_Half/Training_Camp.htm

How does this race compare to Mooseman?

Water is warmer

Bike is flatter

Run roads are more cambered

Number of participants is less

Parking is much easy

Food post race is better

I like Mooseman and Patriot...they are just different.

WTC vs. good local RD

Patriot is faster.

Mooseman is a pain to get lodging. Patriot I can sleep at home.

For my life, Patriot works better as Mooseman for kid activities plus it costs a lot less.

Count me in!!  This will be my first HIM as well.

Mitch-  How can I get my hands on a Gansett race jersey?  That thing rocks.  I've been enjoying the porter all winter long.

FYI -- if anyone is wondering, the race course will have HEED available as the sports drink of choice.  I emailed the RD to find out and had him let me know today.

Also, he asked that no one go swim at Cathedral Camp before the race and without a lifeguard. the camp is very sensitive to folks using it un-aided, etc. Likely a bit liability thing I'd imagine.
