Who's racing this year? Who's done the half before and what are your thoughts on the course. I'm looking forward to this being one of my "A" races this year.

Please share your unofficial thoughts here

I so wanted to do this race this year, but procrastinated and missed out on registration and the wait list.

From what I hear the course is beautiful all the way through, and the swim in the Russian River is interesting as it is only 4 feet deep in many places.

I did the full this past summer. It was a great race and the only race where I ran during the swim.

Is the swim for the Vineman 70.3 also in Russian River? My son and I are considering 2013 Vineman 70.3. We  thought about Oceanside 70.3 but 55 degree water temp at Oceanside changed my mind. Vineman should work for our 70.3 Ironman attempt together. My son and I are participating in Nathans Olympic race this year in Tempe Lake. How was the swim? Did the shallow water create any problems swimming in your race?

I have not done the race personally, but have talked to many who have, and the swim is rather interesting.  It is in the Russian River, and from what I hear, it is shallow enough that you could actually walk the distance (or most of it) and keep your head above water.  One person actually told me he scraped his fingers on the bottom doing his normal freestyle stroke at times.  Quite interesting.  I hear the whole course is beautiful, so it is a definite must-do, at least on my list.

You know I love this race, Kev. I raced in 2008 and last year. Swim is in the Russian River and is super fast. The water is really warm but somehow always wet suit legal. It is VERY shallow in spots and at the turn around you pretty much stand and do a lot of dolphin dives instead of swimming. There is a current which gives a nice boost on the way back to T1. This swim is always a PR for me for 1.2 miles, it just swims FAST. The bike course is really nice and also very fast. Mostly rolling hills with one big hill, Chalk Hill, that comes towrds the end, but it's no big deal. The run is also really nice but it has some climbing as it heads out the Le Creme winery and back. Weather is usually perfect. Cool, overcast in the morning and then warming up when the sun burns through the marine layer clouds while you are on the run.

Both of my race reports are here on BT if you want to read more about the course and entire experience.
