Whats the longest training run you all do on the dreadmill and how to you keep yourself motivated when weather forces you inside?  I have tried movies and such but it seems on the dreadmill I can easily talk myself into taking lots of little walk breaks but then try to remind myself the faster I go the sooner I get off this darn thing.  Tuesday is 100% chance of rain and cold and I have a 14 miler on tap...need ideas.  I cant even imagine how I would handle one of the long weekend runs....hoping mother nature is good to me the rest of the winter.  65 days till spring!!!

I am just starting out with this type of training, but I do have experience.  I am currently going based on calorie burn as to not over do it. I am currently working on burning 500 calories, as my fitness improves I will have to increase the time of the run, this will increase the distance(my goal is endurance) so not really to focused on speed right now.

What i do, I do intervals in my training aerobic zone. 5mins at the top of my aerobic zone, with 2:30mins at the lower end.  I see my time in 15min chunks.  If you do 2 intervals the way I said, that's 15mins.

Also Stu mittleman talks about  "enjoying the run" the prize isn't at the finish line, the prize is movement.  Take note of how you feel, enjoy what you're doing. Also time will pass no matter what. So forget about the time/distance, just focus on enjoying what you're doing, and change things up maybe with intervals.

The longest I've run on a treadmill is an hour. I just zone out and get lost in my thoughts. Otherwise  I start thinking about how long I've been on there and that makes it more excruciating.

I once did 14 miles, I watched all of the movie Wild Hogs. I don't mind the treadmill that much.

I've done a 10k on the treadmill, that's all I can muster.  I hate those things.  I'd rather be cold and/or wet outside.

My longest was 16 miles on the treadmill, but often I find myself doing 2 hour treadmill sessions. The treadmills at my gym have an hour cutoff, so I get a built in walk break every hour to hope off, refill my water, and then come back to reset. So instead of taking walk breaks on the treadmill, get off for a minute or two and walk around the room/gym/house just to give yourself a break from the monotony. As far as entertainment, I normally just listen to my IPod and imagine I'm in my next big upcoming race, and I always imagine I'm doing far better than I ever expected. A bit of positive thinking can go a long way.

Ive done a 40 and 50 mile run and several 15-25's. It get easier with time. That being said, if your off it a while it HORRIBLE to have to get back into it.

i have done a couple of 20+ milers but those were both done at the end of the "indoor" season and had become quite used to the dready by that time.  I know that in the beginning of the "indoor" season i try to go as long as i can on it until i get totally bored or burnt out from it.  after that timeframe is set (usually like 15-20 mins) i use that amount of time as a warm up and then switch something (speed, elevation...) every two minutes until i am done with my workout.  that keeps my mind active and involved and also takes it from a "distance" point of view to 2 min segments, which are easier to manage.

I think one of the issues with the dready is that we are all so used to going outside and running "to a point" that we can see approaching as we come up on it.  with the treadmill its just like standing in one spot all dam day long!!!!

well, i suggest then breaking it down in segments, like maybe 5-10 mins and switching something at the start of each segment.  lots of variations you can do.  raise the incline, run easy pace on no incline, throw in some surges.  its not so much a distraction but more of a keep the mind into it and focus kind of thing.....

another thing i have heard people do is to run a mile for someone in their family.  for instance, the first mile is for Mom, the second mile is for Dad, on and on and on and on.  feel free to run the 13th mile for me!

22 miles For my first marathon in NOLA Feb '11, I was too new to know I could run outside in the cold and rain. I spent most of the winter on the treadmill. I managed to get my first of three 20 mile runs done outside, but the last two I chugged away on the 'mill. The last one I was finiahing up the new Rocky movie and just ran until it was over. I hit 22 just under 3 hours. It sounds terrible, and the idea of it now defeats me, but at the time it was a necessary evil for me. I just had to BQ at NOLA and I thought that we my only option to get the long runs in. Now, I haven't been on a treadmill for 6 months.

Over the summer I was training for Vermont and toward the end of July/August my long runs were getting unbearable with the humidity (I'm a heavy sweater) so I moved it inside for the first time in my life and ran on a treadmill -- did a few long runs of 20-24 miles. The treadmill had to be reset after an hour, so I took a little break every hour, and also increased the pitch every 15 minutes for five minutes, then took a quick break (so a quick break every 20 minutes). This at least gave me something to look forward to to help get my mind of the torturous monotony of running on a treadmill. The last couple of runs I brought my ipad and set it up in the window in front of the treadmill -- I had the 2011 TDF app, so I could replay stages -- that helped a bit too.

That's insane! I did two hours once and it was awful. Cold and rainy or really wet or icy ground are the only conditions that push me indoors.

Hey Jenn  -  how are things with you?  I did a 10M run once on the t'mill.  That was enough.  Most of my t'mil workouts are 30 min.   Good Luck with you training and racing in 2012

Subject: RE: longest dreadmill training run and a question

I have run quite a few in the 12-20 mile range on the 'mill. I have some running videos of the Western States 100 (Race for the Soul and Unbreakable -- new edition this winter)  that I watch. They used to really keep me motivated and running, but I have seen them so many times now that my new strategy is to plug in the DVDs, mute them, and then put on my headphones. That works really well for me right now.

A question, though, for some of you who do the long ones. Every time I push up over 16 on the treadmill I have problems with my IT band.  Whenever my IT has bothered me before it has been because of running hills, so I thought I would be good with the treadmill. The weird thing was that the only way I could get the run done was by speeding up quite a bit (to about half marathon race pace). That worked to complete the run, but speeding up was not really what I wanted to do at the end of the long one. Also, unlike past IT problems, this one goes away by the next day.

I've done lots of 3-4Hour stints on Treadmill.
For variety I vary the Incline at set time intervals, and find I even look forward to increasing incline, just for the change.
But the easiest distractors for me are Live Sports, or even recorded live events- Concerts, Tour De France tapes, live BBall Tourney, coupled with varying the speed for a song or two off the trusty iPod.

Nothing like varying the speed by song, varying the incline by minutes, while watching the Jayhawks win, or the USPS Brigade on old Mtn Stages in the TDF, or listening to a good Rush concert.
