Low 60's and higher with wetsuit is my limit.  I've swam in temps down to low 50's with wetsuit, but much rather hit pool at those temps as I can't stand the cold water.

I'm getting cold reading everyone's responses. I signed up for the Vermont Tough Mudder in May. I was kinda flip about the 40 degree water but now I'm scared.

We are such wimps here in Vegas. We don't like wind, cold weather (under 85 F), nor cold water under 60 ish, but back in high school we used to have contests.

Crew (rowing) season was right after swim season, and in the fist week of March in upstate NY (Canadian border), with ice still floating on the river at about 38-40 F, we would dare eachother to get in and swim.  Of course I was up for any dare and every year, in I would go.   After all I was a swimmer.

Water that cold immediately takes your breath away, and practically stops your heart.

Ah but what do bone head high school athletes know.  It's all about bravado then right?  And there were girls to imipress.

Irish Long Distance Swimming Association race in 2006. 1km open water (North Atlantic) in June. No wetsuits allowed. Water was 12 degrees Celsius (53.6 F). I jumped off the boat and nearly cried it was so cold, and I don't mean comic story telling crying either. I couldn't talk by the time I'd finished, my face was so numb. The previous year the water was 8 C, so they did a few laps of the harbour instead.

I'm about 20lb lighter now so I'm not sure I'd do it again. Not without larding up first.

Once it's in the 50's I'm in with my wetsuit. Cutoff for me depends on my hands and feet - I have Reynauds.  I once swam in water in the 40's but got out after a few hundred yards because my hands and feet and literally turned a dusky purple.

Swam 2K in a pool with 75 degree water yesterday (thanks to a just-fixed boiler), no wetsuit, and was freezing the entire time, but got it done. Once got into a (different) broken pool that was 72 and lasted a whole 150 yards before crying uncle and getting out.

That is COLD!

I have no wetsuit so 65 for short distance, 70 for HIM.

I attended an OWS clinic at Aquatic Park in March 2011 and the water temp was 52 degrees. I was able to make it through about 30 minutes of the clinic before I swam back to shore because my hands and feet felt numb.  A few weeks later I went back to AP after work to swim with the group from Swim Art, and the water that day was around 49 degrees;  about 1/3 of the group tried to get into the water, but decided not to swim.  I knew once the water hit my chest that 49 was obviously my limit.

Hate to rain on your party but I have to say 40F is deadly!! Are they really having a race with water temp that low?

I swam the same 70.3 as Patsy ID in Boise. This year was the coldest it has been in 3 years. I just can't imagine being in the water longer than a 70.3 at 54 degrees. I did some practice swims down to about 50 but for only 20min or so, and I was froze when I got out. So, I'll swim in water in the 50's but I don't like it....60's is much more comfortable.

I did an oly in Banff, AB where the water was 10C with a wetsuit. The RD cut the swim distance in half on race morning. It was cold for sure and between the brain freeze and painful hands and feet you would think that was the worst part....but the biking in the 5-8C temp in the rain was probably worse! Haha. I think in general I would say 12C is prob my cut off for oly or higher....anything lower is too painful.

There, fixed it.

I've been down to 55 with a wetsuit with no problems.

I just signed up for the non-wetsuit class for this year's Alcatraz Sharkfest... water temps usually runs about 60+/-. I'm a little nervous.

Polar Bear plunge in Lake CDA this year, without a wetsuit, does that count?    Water was 38 degrees so I only swam about 10 strokes before I wimped out.  I've been in Lake CDA with a wetsuit at 52 degrees and that's about as low as I'll go.  Once you get to 60 though it's pretty decent.

I did IMCDA this year and that's the coldest I've swam in. I've heard the temp was anywhere between 54-57. I hate the cold and the IM swim start was the biggest fear I had of IM. I guess it just wouldn't have been hardcore enough if the conditions were any better right?I will ONLY swim in that temp again if its for IM. I lost the ability to keep my fingers together on my right hand, they were numb and my muscles just weren't working. My hamstrings started cramping too even though I was barely using them... And I was very dizzy coming out of the water. Took 2 hours on the bike before I could feel my feet completely. I HATE cold water.

I tried swimming in Lake Superior this summer (September) with just a wetsuit.  My feet hurt so bad just walking into the cold water that I never even began to swim...lol.  I didn't have a thermometer on me, but the local weather station said the water was 58.

Swimming an IM in 54 degree water.....OUCH.  Can't even imagine.

I swim in the St Mary's River at the south end of Superior so I know what you mean, I am usually good to about 55F.
