Bike course should be interesting...down Indian Head Highway.  That's a MAJOR road with a 50 mph speed limit and lots of traffic lights, at least for the first few miles.  No word on the website about road closure.

Yeah it's quite surprising.  I didn't think the DC Tri was all that enticing especially with the water issues the first year.  It'll be interesting to follow this.  It looks pretty exciting thus far.  $265 is getting steep for 70.3s but after the high price of IMNYC, I thought it might be more than $265.

Considering the Nation's Tri is $200, it might be a bargain.  However, Nation's does have nice closed roads and a scenic venue.

Any guesses about water temps for that time of year? Nothing mentioned on website.

I am interested to see how this race pans out. Its only a 45min drive from my place and would make for a nice first IM 70.3 next year! I hope they have road closures for some of the main roads.

Totally depends on rain but I would almost guarantee a non-wetsuit-legal swim.  Heck, Eagleman is almost 8 weeks earlier in the summer and it's usually around 76-80 degrees.

I'm doing Eagleman in June as my first 70.3, and was planning to do the Nation's Tri.  Would this be too soon to attempt another half instead of Nations?  My plans for both are to finish around the 75th percentile - pretty much BOP.

We're all experiments of one, as they say, but I would think 8 weeks is enough time to recover, recharge, and put in some training and be ready for National Harbor.  That might enough time for two "A" races for pros, but for us mere mortals probably just one of them.

If I were in your position I would do the 70.3 as you said it is a bargain at only $65 more.  The 2 months between the two 70.3s is fine.  Inaugural races can be a bit messy so don't rely 100% on course support.  Crazy things like running out of water, do occur.  You'd think MDot would be different but last year had some bad stories in 70.3s.

I just hope it goes off better than the hot chocolate at the harbor.

It's an inaugural event, but it's being organized by the same team that runs DC Tri and Nations Tri, so they do know what they're doing. National Harbor is a good venue for an event like this, as there are places to stay right there, and things for friends and family to do during the race. I hope this one is a success. Hot Chocolate 5/15k was a disaster, but those organizers are not involved in this one.

The course actually looks fairly reasonable. The fact that they have sought out some shade for the run (Henson Creek Trail) is a good thing. Although Indian Head Highway is indeed a big road, a quick look on Google Street View indicates that it has pretty good shoulders. It should be fine at 9am on a Sunday morning, and probably fairly fast. The main thing will be getting volunteers at the many turn ins/outs.

They make a big deal of "limited support on course" so it sort of suggests the roads won't be closed... Plus - August?! That'll be hot as anything! I won't be ready for a HIM this year, so I can wait for the reviews before thinking about it next year.

Haha, that's what I was thinking too.  At least the 70.3 won't have nearly as many participants so hopefully that will take care of the traffic problems.

Knowing traffic in the area, I cant see the bike portion of this going smoothly. Drivers arent going to want to wait for triathletes to pass through intersections and triathletes arent going to be happy about having to stop at stoplights (in order to prevent being run over).

In general I have to question how many years they can pull this off and not have the public screaming to their elected officials to stop the race.  Similar to how the DC Grand Prix was a one-and-done.  So it may be good to get it in that first year.

Well, I'll be your guinea pig!  I registered for this as my 1st half IM.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed as all I want to do is to finish.  Given the reviews I've seen here I'll definitely watch my back specially on the bike course!  I'll of course provide my race report whether I DNF or complete it....

I'm looking to volunteer at this year IM70.3 @ National Harbor.  I'm just getting started in my IM journey, and I'm thinking it would be great research and experience to volunteer this year so that I know what I'm getting into.  With my 2012 race calendar pretty much planned, participating in 2013 in a 70.3 is my first big goal.

Here is the email that went out.  I think people are mostly unhappy because they don't even say why it is getting cancelled.  At least we get our $$ back.

Refunds will be issued within 30 days and will be credited to the card used for registration through the Active Network.

Ironman is committed to helping participants reach their goal of racing an Ironman 70.3 in 2012 and will further offer each athlete impacted by the cancellation a $50 discount to one of the events listed below:

Please contact [email protected] with questions.

I wonder if it was a logistical problem or if it was a $$ issue and not enough people registered. Will be interesting to find out.
