Subject: Chlorine itch

So, back in the pool after a hiatus and I notice now that my skin gets really itchy.  Has to be the chlorine right?  I'm bathing within 5 minutes of getting out of the pool.  Does anyone have any recommendations on soaps/body washes/lotions etc.  other solutions that will get this itch to go away?

thanks!

I have the same problem and i think its the amount of chemicals the gym puts in the pool. I dont know if there is anything to prevent it (if so please let me know). I just shower before hand and shower right after and when I get home, if I am still itchy I put lotion on. Most of the time, the only spot that itches is my back.

I use the TriSwim products.  Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion.  It has helped tremendously with not only the itch/dryness but also the smell.

There was also a pre swim balm I used...it worked great for blocking chlorine absorption but it had bees wax or something in it and clogged my pores.  If I used it on my face I'd break out.

I echo the comment on TriSwim products.  Great products that do exactly what they are supposed to, keep you from smelling like a pool and dealing with side effects of pool water.

Not showering before you swim will cut down on the itching signifcantly.

Typically the itching if from a ph imbalance in the pool, not necessarily the amount of chlorine. That being said, if they've shocked the pool with chlorine you will notice it, especially in your eyes.

Ask the lifeguard, or whomever runs the pool how oftern they are checking the levels in the water.  they should be doing Chlorine, ph at the least daily.  supervised pools are typically hourly or bi hourly. There are a variety of tests including alkalinity, etc. too...but if the pool isn't being properly monitored....it's all moot.

Not sure what your circumstances are, but salt water pools are becoming more popular now, especially as they don't cause the symptoms a traditional chlorine pool has to deal with.  Perhaps there's another pool if yours is not being monitored properly.

X3 on TRI Swim. They also have a Moisturizer Cream which is awesome. I used to get seriously itchy skin all winter thanks to the dry air and the pools/Shower etc. That stuff made a difference right away and saved my sanity. Now I use it every 3-4 days in the winter and I ditched the itch!

Well, technically a salt water pool is still chlorinated... just that the chlorine is added through the salt process and at much lower levels...

I'm allergic to chlorine (yes, we've already had this debate whether you can be allergic to it or not... my Dr. calls is allergic, you may call it sensitive if you so choose...), and here's what works for me.

Shower before swim (it's a public pool, so be considerate of others and just do it), as soon as you get out of the pool, rinse off quickly, sit in the sauna or steam room for a few minutes (this will open up the pores and allow you to really get the chlorine out of your skin). Go straight from the sauna/steam room to the shower and scrub really well with a loofah or a washcloth. As soon as you're toweled off, apply baby oil.

Thanks for the coupon but I have a local swim shop that carries TriSwim.  They are very nice and support the local swim community.  If you're in the Seattle area, visit Sylvia's.

Go Rev3 Portland.

Eucerin (or the generic equiv) makes a great cream. It's REALLY thick though, so best for bedtime.

cetaphil makes some great stuff too to calm down itchy skin

I've never tried the products mentioned, but I find that a good sweat in the sauna after a swim, before showering, seems to reduce the itch for me.  Takes 10 minutes or so, and feels good, too.

I've just used some skin lotion after my post swim shower, and that takes care of it. I've had the pool its so bad at times I've scratched my legs until they've bled, so I'm a big fan of the skin lotion.
