After a workout do you spend your last 5 minutes cooling down? Or do you spend them warming down?  Inquiring minds need to know!  And I will of course need a detailed and well researched explanation for your answer.

No one out there is doing a cool up at the beginning of a workout are they?

You were probably hoping for answers a little more serious than we've given. Personally, I don't get the thing of people saying "warm down" either. We warm up, so isn't the opposite cool down? I have no idea where the term came from, but I know some coaches who say it.

Warm up - Coffee in the morning.

Cool Down - Beer at night

Otherwise not much of either.

Actually this is just about what I expected... I may still be a newbie around here but I have learned to expect silliness.  What does surprise me though is that no one has mentioned either flip turns or lowering my seat...

Honestly though I had never heard the term "Warm Down" until recently, and it makes no sense to me.  Like you say.  You warm up so then when your done you do the opposite which would be "Cool Down"

I mean think about it.  If something is warming, its temperature is increasing.  We tend to denote increases with the term "Up", as in "Turn up the heat".  If somthing is cooling, its temperature is decreasing, and this we associate with the term "Down", as in "Turn down the heat".  So it would stand to reason, at least to me that "Warm down" would require you to both increase and decrease your body temperature at the same time, whereas "Cool Down" simply refers to bringing your body temperature back down to a cooler temperature than it was at while you were working out.

But he what do I know, Ive been told my seat is too high, so take that into consideration when considering my arguments.

I think it's an attempt to differentiate post main-set sections of the workout. Like the easy jogging at the end of a run vs stretching or whatever else one may do. IMO, it over-complicates things. I don't get the point when the specific activity is said anyway.

Practicing flip turns is a good warm down technique.
