I had the opportunity to watch an nationally recognized youth swim program practice yesterday.  This group looked between 15 and 17 years old.  Unbelieveable.  Like many adult onset swimmers, I have watched plenty of youtube videos of Olympic/elite swimmers, but there is something about seeing exceptional swimmers, six to a lane, eight lanes deep going at it.  Body position, breathing technique and sheer volume were amazing.  I only watched thirty minutes, but they probably put in more yards than I could in 1.5 hours.  All seemingly effortless.  If you have the opportunity, I recommend it.

I had the chance to do that once on a business trip to Florida.  I went to a local Y that was predominantly about swimming (multiple pools inside it was huge) and while swimming there at 6am a youth team from Sweden came in and began to practice.  Their coach didn't really say a word, the whole workout was scripted.  They got in 6 or more to a lane and proceeded to swim for an hour doing a combination of strokes and drills with speed and ease that was amazing.

I got the distinct impression it was just their morning calisthenics.

I find it awe inspiring.  In the squad I train with - the coach has the record for fastest English Channel crossing, we have about 6 or so successful channel swimmers - we have the Czech Olympic Bronze Medalist, Triathlon, we have the Australian National Triathlete Champion - the way these guys power through the water is astounding.

I went to a swim meet on Thursday and did the 1.4km, at the end was a 'celebrity relay' including the great Michael Klim - he made the others look like they were floundering including my coach.  His position inthe water was like a speed boat, the top half was out of the water, lifting up on each stroke, the rest of his body sat on top of the water and he looked like it was nothing to him.

I often swim next to a guy who went to the Olympic trials 08’.  He swam for Florida Gators and is still on the ALL-TIME TOP-10 LIST for the 1500m @15:35.75

Yes I know him and talk to him all the time.  Great guy some of his best times are 500 Free - 4:23.60, 1000 Free - 9:16.10 and 1650 Free - 15:08.29

I asked him if he bikes or runs.

I often swim next to (not 'with', mind you, 'next to') Collegiate swimmers.  Yes, amazing to watch in person.  When they swim by in the next lane over, I am simultaneously inspired and depressed.

I would emphasize the 'seemingly' part of 'seemingly effortless'.  Those people are working, and working hard.  They make it look easy, but it isn't.

a few weeks ago there was a lady swimming next to me that was freakishly fast.  She was swimming two laps to my every one.  It was so impressive, she just kept going and going.

I have no clue who she was, but I agree it is so impressive to watch really fast swimmers.
