Do you want to bike from there or drive to somewhere close and ride from there?  It will make a difference.

either way

i would drive to get away from all the congestion

i have heard of a route north of city taking sheridan rd north

also have heard of a route around argon laboratories in darien

but having a route close by always is nice, there is a path right here but doesnt have alot of straight aways. it is very hilly and has tons of turns.

If you are brand new to it all and only looking for trails to ride on and not roads, there is Old Plank Trail that you can pick up just South of Route 30.  I think if you do it out and back it is in the 38 mile range.

That's going to be the closest LONG one for you to ride on.  There are others around but they are shorter loops like in Rubio Woods just north of Tinley Park.  I think that one is all of about 9 miles.

If you are interested in getting out with a group, the South Chicago Wheelmen go out of Yankee Woods and do a no drop 60+ miler on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  Although Sunday's might actually be out of Goodspeed Cycles in Homewood, but not sure about that quite yet.  If it doesn't rain this weekend, I might be going out on Sunday with them.

If you just want to hit less travelled roads, just start experimenting south of I-80 and you will be in corn fields in no time.

Theres a great Tri Club near you called TriSmart....Great peeps and most of them live near you in the Tinley /Orland area. They frequently ride out to Elwood Crete from there. I live Southwest of you in Channahon and have great roads out here. Lotsa cornfields but some nice riding on roads along the I&M Canal from Channahon out to Seneca.
