Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:15, got ready and had my usual race day breakfast: whole wheat bagel with Nutella and a glass of orange juice. Then headed to the race site. got there an hour before race time, got my bib and set up my transition area. Half an hour before the start I had a gel and a bottle of Gatorade.
Event warmup:

I stretched for a bit, then jogged for a little over half a mile, with some glides and then stretched some more. Ten minutes before the start I headed over to the starting line.
Run
  • 26m 43s
  • 3.25 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

I started out a little faster than I had planned, so in order not to get to the bike too tired, I slowed down a little in the second half. I tried to focus as much as possible on running efficiency and for parts of the run, I achieved this successfully. I used the aid station just to get water and drop it on my head. This worked very well. When I got back to transition I felt good for the bike segment.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe pace myself a little better in that first mile.
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

For now, I am keeping transitions simple. I get my shoes on before getting on the bike. I just run on my bike shows until the mount line, get on my bike and off I go. I did OK, pretty much what I expected.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at this point, in the future I will practice the flying mount, but not too worried about this right now.
Bike
  • 28m 12s
  • 9.51 miles
  • 20.23 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt super good on this ride. I had energy to push relatively hard keeping a high cadence to be efficient and still save some legs for the run. Right out of transition I pushed a little too much, but then I realized I had to shift down a gear and after that I found my groove. I gained many spots during the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Again, kept this simple, unclipped, stopped the bike and stepped off, run with bike shoes in transition, racked bike, changed shoes and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

In the future, practice taking shoes off on the bike and jumping off, but not in a hurry to work on this.
Run
  • 27m 58s
  • 3.29 miles
  • 08m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile was painful. Even though I saved my legs some on the bike, when I started running I realized it was going to be a long 5.3k. After that first mile I had to drop the pace a little bit, part because I needed it physically and part because the sand portion was starting. Towards the end I sped up slightly and gave almost everything I had left.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I went as fast as I could with what I had left to work with,
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit, drank 24oz of water, had a breakfast burrito, a banana, some fig newtons and some strawberries.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think as did as well as I could have expected. With time and training I will get faster, but the race went pretty much according to plan. I could have spent some time practicing faster transitions, but at this point 30 secs do not seem like a difference-maker.

Course: The first half of the course we ran on asphalt, then when we get to the turnaround we go into an area that has packed sand for the most part. They modified the ran compared to the triathlon I did here in October, in order to have the people get into transition on the side they wanted, they had to make the run longer than 5k. The portion they added is looser sand, and it was a nasty surprise after the first 3 miles.
