I signed up for this based on some conversations I've had with people who have done it previously. Now, I'm getting a bit nervous and hoping for some reassurance.

Here's the thing: To this point, I have panicked in open water swims every single time. The people I've talked to have characterized this as the most gentle open-water swim experience they've ever encountered. Can anybody who's done this confirm that characterization? My thinking is that if I can't do this without freaking out, then maybe triathlon isn't for me. I'll stick to duathlons, road races, and maybe the occasional indoor tri. If I can get through this with some measure of aplomb, though, maybe there's hope for me yet in the open water.

Anyone? ... Bueller?

Tri-Bob,
This will be my third year for Escape the Cape Sprint Tri. My experience in Tri's is limited to six sprints. This was my first ever tri. The swim is parallel to the shore line and one straight short. If you get a little anxiety you can swim slightly to your left and stand up. Max Performance is a class act and there is plenty of lifeguards and Kayaks if needed. The bike is pretty flat with some small hills on the way back. The run is along the water for a good period. I have some bias toward this race because it was my first but I don't think you'll be disappointed. Good luck!

Tri bob,

What makes you panick in the open water? Is it the people swimming around you? People wacking you? Or just being in open water in general? If you swam solo in open water are you okay?

I did this race last year. One of my favorite sprints. It is a straight swim so you don't get the bunch ups at the turns, which is nice. As the other poster said you can swim to the left or even right away from the crowds. You will start in the water so you have the option of letting the crowd get ahead of you before you get moving.
I think this is a great race to test your fear out. Personally I think it's all how you position yourself. I swam side by side with someone last year in the first group and we exchanged elbows the entire swim, but I could have easily eased back if I wanted to get away from it (I'm competitive).

I feel like I saw something last year about Max Perf. offering swim clinics. Might be a good option for you.

This is a GREAT beginner sprint!  I did this one 2 years ago and it remains one of my most favorites.  I am recommending this one for my husband because he too is afraid of OWS.  Its a channels swim - point a to point B.  Unless there is big wind creating a lot of frothy waves , its pretty calm in there and like everyone above has said, if you panic just swim to the left a bit and stand up.  When the weather warms up a bit go check it out and see for yourself

Last year this was my first tri ever and I had a blast. Max put on a OWS clinic about a month before and that helped a lot.  The 2 other sprints I did after this were fresh water triangle courses.  Escape's point to point was the easiest to manage (sighting), and for me I felt a little less causterphobic in the bay. Its still not a super easy swim - it's freaking cold and I'm pretty sure it was against wind/current (check out last year's video). Also you have to do a little more than turn to your left if you need to bail out towards shore. That will take some energy out of you. Just learn to calm down (great advice all over here) and proceed with your swim. You can do it!

Thanks, all. I was definitely planning to do at least one of their open-water swim clinics; I'm just waiting for them to post the dates. Sounds like if I can't do this swim without incident, it's time to forget about it. Hope to see you all there, and thanks!

I've registered for this race, but have never done it before.  I'm glad you posted this, Tri Bob.  It's great to see people's feedback on the race!

I participated in one of the swim clinics that Max Performance put on last season and would highly recommend it.  It was great!

Less than two weeks out, folks. Who's in? My YMCA training club did a practice run (and bike and swim) on all three courses this last weekend, and it's a nice course in a nice little seaside town.

Seems like very race describes the bike course as "flast and fast," but I often find it not to be so. Here, though, I'd say that's an accurate description. We did learn from a local resident, though, that the roads aren't closed during the race because there are so few of them there. Looks like it could get a little dicey leading up to and getting away from the turnaround. There are a couple of hills on the run, but nothing outlandish like the ones at the season opener in Hopkinton last weekend.

The water was pretty cold (62 degrees at about 9:30), but fairly clean. Assuming we're not in the middle of heavy weather on race day, I can confirm that the swim course is a gentle one. This was my first open-water swim experience that did not include a panic attack. So I have that going for me.

Saddle up!

Speak for yourself, I'm doing the one on Sunday, so it's looking good for me!

Seriously though, sorry the forecast isn't looking too hot for Saturday. I've done my share of rainy races too, so I can empathize. Good luck!

They're keeping the Saturday race on Saturday. Well, at least I'll have an excuse this time for why my performance will be awful. *sigh*

If I wear a pink tri top can I race on Sunday instead? What's the deal with the Title 9 races anyway?  I guess most women prefer women only races?  Aren't waves already separated by gender?  Please educate me.  I love that races are co-ed!  More racers, more spectators and, let's say more motivation Maybe there are too many old guys like me in your way!

I guess I may just drag out the 30 year old road bike that I used last year instead of the tri-bike I've been riding all winter.  Thats a true bummer.

I don't really understand the need for women only races either. I suppose it falls in the same category as women only gyms and such, in that some women feel more comfortable being in what can be a competitive setting without super aggressive men around. I could really care less about what the men at my races are up to, since I don't generally feel as though I'm racing against them. Honestly, it's going to sound terrible, but I signed up for this one since I thought it would give me a better shot at placing high in my AG. That being said, I still chose to sign up for the coed MA State race next month, since I'm not really into doing too many all women races.

Good luck to all of you slogging through tomorrow!

Hey, did anybody use their Garmin or other GPS properly in this race? I completely spaced with mine, so I can't get the individual distances/times. Specifically, I'm trying to determine whether the second run was really a full 5K. If it was, then I killed it and beat my most recent open 5K time by about a minute. Which makes me seriously doubt it was a full 5K.

Anyone? Bueller?

My Garmin showed 2.9 mi for the second run, so I would agree that it was a little short.
