We are all big, bad, tough, ripped triathletes and can take A LOT of pain! We don't cry when we crash and brake bones, we don't stop training when we are sick. We swim in cold water, run in the rain and spend hours on the bike taking whatever mother nature throws at us. I could go on and on about what we take and just grin and bare it. I don't cry from pain but when I went volunteer at IMFL and watched people cross the finish line I had tears rolling down my face. I really have no idea why. Is it because I want it so bad? Is it because I know what it took to get to that point? Is it because I am so happy for that person? Not sure. I do know that God willing I will cross that line on Nov 3 and wait for those words. "You are an Ironman!". As I was watching people cross that finish line, some stumbling and unaware of the hundreds of people around them, and others giving highfives as they ran down with there arms in the ai, I looked to my left and to my right and saw many others like me watching with tears on there face. If I had to give my best guess as to why I would say its an overdose of inspiration. What do you think???

I'm not exactly sure why, but I got goosebumps just reading your post about the finish line.

For me, when I was training, watching the finish line was so amazing because I had the same goal and was working toward it. Now when I see IM finishers, it reminds me of the whole training/ prep/ racing.

I think it is inspiration overload. And for a lot of people, it's the finish line at not just the end of race, but the end of many months and years of training.

Yes, this is an interesting observation.  I've been pretty emotional after each IM I've finished and also everytime I'm a spectator at an IM finish line.  And I think watching others cross the finish line is even more emotional after you've crossed it yourself as you know so well the sacrifice and effort it takes to get there.  Makes the finish line of an IM one of the most amazing places there is.

I think they are crying because they realized they just paid $500+ to torture their body

Yeah, I have never been at an IM as a spectator but the more I train and the more I race the more those videos bust me up. The high school cross country ones really get me going.

I've watched the Kona 2011 video a half dozen times and every time I see the athlete without legs climb out of the swim (Scott Rigsby?) I am overwhelmed. Say what you want about NBC's coverage, they did capture some powerful moments.

When I first got into the sport I used to think, cry for a ironman race?....come on people its just a race....however when I battled cramps in my first HIM to finish, it crossed my mind that if one day I finish a full IM I may cry like a baby.

Love those stories.

Whew! It's not just me. I thought I was just being a total wussbag. I don't cry about much but I start to tear up watching IM finishing videos. I have no idea as to the true why. I'm a long way away from finishing an IM myself. If all goes well at the HIM I have planned this year then I'm shooting for fall of 2013 but still... Knowing even just a portion of what it takes to get there...

I'm glad to know I'm not alone.

I started crying this morning when the Garden Fairies won the Pixie Hollow Games.  And I'd already seen it.

Dude I rarely actually laugh out loud from reading internet posts, but I am now. I knew I liked your style. We probably have daughters the same age. (At least I hope that's why you're watching the Pixie Hollow Games. - sidenote, I got my picture with Vidia the naughty fairy at Disney in 2010. Oh yeah.)

For me it's the Little Mermaid. Don't give your voice away Ariel! Don't do it!

Oh yeah, and Ironman on NBC. That too.

I have no doubt that one day, when I cross the finish line at an IM, I will probably shed a tear or two.

Not saying I'm a tough cookie but the first time (OK, and each subsequent time, too) I spectated IMLP I was moved to tears at least a dozen times throughout the day by complete strangers!  At the start, during the race, at the finish line.  Seeing those who crashed or didn't make the cut-off and whose days ended early who put in hours and hours of training for naught.  Seeing those who crashed but were able persevere and keep going.  Seeing those who are struggling but getting it done.  It just does something to me, empathizing with the pain, effort, sacrifices and determination the racers are experiencing.  Add to that kids running/walking with Mom/Dad going up the hill coming back into the main drag or getting so excited just to see Mom/Dad and to see the smiles that grow huge on Mom/Dad's face in spite of the pain...crap, tearing up now just remembering...I'm such a SOFTIE!
