Subject: Full Marathon 5 weeks before HIM?

Hey guys, I have a question on my schedule this year.  I've signed up for the Lincoln, NE full Marathon which is on May 6th and the Kansas HIM which is on June 10th.  I'm starting to question doing a full marathon that close to the HIM because it's right in the thick of my HIM training plan.

I'm not worried about recovering in time for the HIM because I think 5 weeks is plenty, but I'm a little worried about losing 2 weeks of HIM training (taper week and recovery week)

From a priority standpoint I care more about the HIM, but I'd still like to crank out a significant new PR in the Marathon.

So, what do you guys think.  just do the half marathon and consider it a long run training day or do the full marathon?

First of all, marathon anywhere within sniffing distance of an HIM is a bad idea. Considering that you also have your first IM three months after that, it's a really bad idea.

If you truly cared about the marathon because you'd raised a bunch of money commemorating a deceased parent (or something like that) but didn't care how you did at either the mary or the HIM, then I'd say, maybe. Just to complete both.

I have a full Mary on March 4 and a HIM on April 1.  I did a full trail Mary this past Saturday (Feb 11.)

I know I am not going to win any of the races I enter, so I just go out to have fun with my races.  I am a little sore from my run on Saturday in my quads, but I had never run on a trail before that.

I couldn't do it.  It takes me too long to recover.  If you taper 2 weeks and recover 3 weeks and then taper 2 weeks your last real training is 8 weeks prior to your HIM.  The half mary would be much better as far as not needing to taper more than a couple of days and recover a couple of days.  If you have an IM coming up, um ya too much for anyone I know.  I try to put my Mary 5-6 months away from an IM and a HIM 7 weeks out front of an IM.  This year I tried to recover quicker and ended up with muscle issues for much longer.  You will do what you will do, but not recommended.

Well I was going to dedicate the run to our recently deceased Rabbit (Snowflake), so now I may have to run the full Marathon... (just kidding)

That pretty much sums up my concern.  I want to do well in the HIM and IM and could really give two hoots about the Marathon.  So I think I'll just run the half.  I haven't looked at my training plan, but it wouldn't surprise me if I had a long run that weekend anyway.

btw, here's a pic of Snowflake

Thanks for the feedback.  I didn't really give it a lot of thought when I first signed up but as I looked at my calendar this year I started to question the timing.  based on the advice of this thread and my gut feel I'm definitely going to just run the half so it doesn't interrupt my training too much.

I love bunnies! What an awesome pic!

RIP Snowflake.

He looks like he was a righteous rabbit. I am sure his Lagomorph Spirit in the Sky will appreciate the half just as much as the full, especially since you'll still be primed to put in a kickazz hoppin' HIM and IM later on.
