This is a spin off from the Flo thread and just wanting to guage what you guys think about ceramic bearings. This article was posted in the flow thread and suggests a 4% savings, or 6 min over 100km at 40km.

That's a pretty significant savings, what do you guys think, worth the extra $100 per wheel? I say yes if the claim is true, but is it true?

I have to assume from the article they are talking wheels, bottom bracket, derailer. They did say the wheels were the biggest part of the equation so could I still be looking at maybe 3%

I know work the engine.

As far as I know, that is entirely bogus.  I would guess saving, if any, are well under 1 watt (think fractions of a percent).  No, I do not think it is likely worth the extra $.

Yes.  I think it would be worth an extra $100 per wheel to save 6 min over 100km (or more for me, as i don't ride anywhere near that fast.

No.  I don't think that ceramic bearings make nearly that much difference.  6min at that speed would be ~ a 20w savings if I did my math right.  ceramic bearings are probably more like a 1w savings (total, not each)

Based on what I've read, complete waste of money for cycling applications.

I agree with Johnny on this one, you'd need to be spinning something REALLY fast to need ceramic bearings.

Once you get your wheels up to 10,000rpm or so the ceramic bearings will make a good bit of difference.
