Subject: Fayetteville rides (20-40 mi) this weekend?

Anyone know of any rides in the 20-40mi range happening this weekend? I'd even be cool with doing  a brick (40/8 sounds feasible). The trainer is starting to really bore me so it's time to take it back to the streets I suppose. Does anyone know of any group rides or anything going on in the Fayetteville area?

Many thanks...

Don't know anything about them but there is this:

I'm based near Southern Pines and do some of my riding on the Fort Bragg Reservation.

I'm doing the 45 mile "C" group ride Sat. with Cross Creek and a short 1-2 mile brick after (recovering from knee surgery).  A few from the local Fayetteville Area Tri-Warriors Club will be riding as well.  Cross Creek is a great group of people to ride with, all the info is on their website.

9 a.m. for the Developmental rides Sat morning, and I believe there's an afternoon ride at 1:30, but not sure of the length on that one.

You should check it out!  And to add one more thing, you actually need to be ready and on your bike ready to roll at 9.

I work on Ft Bragg and my new favorite place for bricks and Tri bike riding is the loop around the airfield on Pope AFB. It's 6.2 miles of mostly traffic-free goodness with a running trail right next to it. Not sure how hard it is to get on base if you're a civilian, but it's a nice place to ride. Pavement is quite a bit smoother than on most of Bragg.

Alternatively, if you go to www.rainbowcycles.com they have a lot of great routes out of Southern Pines. I live in SP so most of my riding is out here.

Just started the Pope loops. It is a great ride. Good place to start out for me.

DrPete or Swussow,

Can you give more details about the Pope loop?

Does the loop include Manchester, Reilly and Hurst/New Hurst roads?

Also, where is the place to park and where is the running trail?

Thanks, Alan.

Alan--here's a link to one of my Pope loop rides:

http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/BHOTNP2QQDXNXKUL7VBFW6R46A

You see I went around a few different ways--I found that when you're coming south on Reilly, turning right onto Boxcar then left on Interceptor and taking that to Hurst is the simplest, and avoids the section of Reilly that gets a little snarled up with traffic. Don't get on Manchester as parts of it are closed to accommodate things which may or may not officially exist on Ft. Bragg and you'll hit a dead end if you try to take it all the way around.

I parked in the parking lot of the 21st Special Tactics Squadron, which is where the start/finish marks are. It's a decent sized parking lot and usually has some free spaces.

The running path basically follows the same route and is a wide sidewalk with a little softer surface on the northern part of the loop along Reilly.

Total for the lap is about 6.2 miles as you can see, and is pretty flat and fast with one traffic light and one or two stop signs.

Hope that helps, and maybe I'll see you out there sometime.

Pete

Hey, Dr. P, let's get together sometime and ride/run the loop. I work at Bragg and have ridden the loop many times. It's a good route and you can really open it up around the back.

Alan,  the loop is whatever you want it to be. If you start on Pope, you don't have to even get on the hell route that is Reilly.

Maybe we can get a BT ride going around Pope some day soon.

Sounds good. Not to drag the thread too far off, but I'm also looking for a pool on the Pinehurst/SP side. If you've got any suggestions, can you shoot me a PM? Thanks.

I'm all for working on a BT ride at Pope. It would be especially good on the weekends. Very newb-friendly and lots of places to let it rip, like you said.

Thanks Dood and DrPete!  This looks like a good place for Stacey to ride to get used to her new tri bike.  I'm doing White Lake Half and I'm trying to help her get ready if she decides to do White Lake Sprint.

Too bad the workout is marked as private.

Doh! I need to figure out how to fix that. I tried last night but it's still listing as private. If I can't I'll get it onto bikeroutetoaster or something.
