Subject: Total Bike Milage for an HIM

After doing a couple of marathons the past couple of years, I'm ready to switch over and give an HIM a shot.  Done several sprints and one Olympic as well.

My problem is all the running has left little time for riding and my bike milage has sucked the last couple of years (like 400 miles for the year sucked).

So, I've got the BT beginner HIM plan printed and am getting ready to jump in next week.  I am aware of some of  the previous discussion that this plan might be a little light on the bike so I'm going to ramp it up a bit.

With the plan listed in time rather than miles, what do you all feel would be a reasonable target for total bike milage heading into the race?  As in, "I wouldn't attempt an HIM without riding XXX miles."

My search attempts proved futile.  Thanks for the help!

I did my first on about 1600 for the year (Oct 2011 HIM). In 2010, I rode 500 miles.

I did fine and I felt prepared for the race. That said, I'm a slowpoke on the bike. I plan on riding more this year.

I raced my 1st HIM May 5, 2011.  From Jan 1, 2011 until race day, I rode 708 miles.  I was coming off my first season of triathlons in 2010 where I finished with an OLY on October 1, 2010.

In that HIM in May 2011, I rode a 2:45 bike split on a flat course.

Follow the plan and just ride as much as you are able.  There's no good answer to your question.

Has anyone actually added up the miles in the plan over the 120 days ?

I didn't like the time instead of miles either, especially because some of my routes had a red lights/stop signs/etc. The longest it has you ride IIRC is 3 hours. So I decided to do 20 miles for every hour it specified no matter how long it took me.

Do get too caught up in doing exactly the time given in a plan.  Just get reasonably close. If it calls for 1:30 bike and you average 18mph while actually riding (excluding stop signs, etc ) just go out and do around 27 miles.  If you have a favorite route that's 25 miles, ride the route and add some harder intervals to make up for the shorter distance.  If the route is 30, then great, go do that.

The same applies for swim workouts.  Lots of plans list a detailed 60 minute workout.  Some people can get it done in 50 minutes while others will take 70 minutes.  Do quality work and you will be fine.

I'm not following any specific plan, but I'm at 340 miles since late November and I've got a long way on the bike before I'm ready for a HIM.  Sure I could complete it, but not comfortably.  I am shooting for somewhere around 1200 by the end of May as my bike distances will be ramping pretty dramatically up over the next few weeks.

I did Soma last year with no more than 300 miles on the bike in any month that year. I eeked out a little over 21 mph / 209 W avg for the bike course. I also didn't have the run I expected to have. I'm not sure if that can be completely blamed on the bike effort or if nutrution, starting pace, and/or heat were bigger players.

You should be able to ride 100 miles in a week in 3 rides- 20, 25, 55. If you can do that you will have enough base to make it. If you do more you will be able to ride stronger but you must always back off a bit to save yourself for the run. There is no such thing as a bad run after a good bike, just poor planning.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.  It's nice to hear what some of you did going into your races and will help get me more comfortable with what might work for me.

I did add up the total hours (correctly, I hope) and it's right at 66 hours of riding.  So, using the 20 miles per hour number, that would work out to 1,320 miles (or 1,188 @ 18 MPH), which sounds in the ballpark of what some are suggesting.
