I drink some sort of "green" smoothie nearly every day!
Yep, oddly the greens (spinach, kale, etc) don't seem to come into play too much on overall taste.

Here's a cool chart I found if you want to mix it up a bit:

Here is my take on one of the recipes:

2 hand fulls of spinach (more or less as you blend and can tell thickness)

1 banana (I use non-frozen but frozen work too)

1 hand full frozen blueberries

1 tablespoon peanut butter or nut butter (optional but gooood!)

1 cup almond milk

Other berries (fresh/frozen), ice, other powders and such as you wish

I love these and drink them almost every day.  Fills me up so I do not over eat so I have one before dinner most days

Do these taste ok without the bananas? Do you just use a regular blender? I bought a blender last year just to make smoothies for my husband. We tried 2 - he barely tasted them and that was it! He can't stand bananas.

You can add or leave out whatever you want! Instead of bananas add frozen berries

Paleo Green Machine

Here's my addition to the list.  And I just tried kale last week which was great!  This is a great way to get more leafy greens into your diet.  My husband even likes them and he's not a veggie person AT ALL.

that sounds fantastic!!

I'm a HUGE fan of green smoothies, done several cleanses with nothing but green smoothies By now, my smoothies are supergreen

To all who were asking about which fruit/greens to use..... you can use any fruit you like.. essentially, fruit will mask the taste of greens so many people don't like, and while the smoothie will look green (or brown, or purple, depending on what berries you add), it'll largely taste like a fruit smoothie. Ideally, you are shooting for 30-40% fruit and the rest greens. The darker the greens, the better (kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, all manner of chard, collard greens etc)-more nutrient dense.

I have a Vitamix and swear by it. Before Vitamix, i used my old blender... well, 2 times a year? HATED it.. since I got Vitamix (July?), I use it daily, sometimes twice a day. The thing would probably blend concrete. I routinely put 1/2 avocado in my smoothies and will put half or whole avocado pit (great source of soluble fiber)... but I would not recommend blending the pit in a less than powerful blender (may break blender).. It's pricey, no doubt, but imho, well worth every penny.

ok, I can talk about this forever hehe

Ok - just made one with

Kale

Banana

Orange

a little water

a cup full of frozen mixed fruit

I don't have any protein powders or anything like that

It tasted fine. It should have used some ice because it wasn't very cold. I told my 5 year old son he should try some. He looked at me like I was crazy but he tried it. Now he won't stop talking about how good it was!

1 bunch swiss chard

1 cucumber

juice from 1/2 a lime

water

aloe vera juice

mixed frozen berries

kelp, Vega powder, Barlean greens, rice protein powder

Made 2 quarts that I shared with hubby.  Btw, I also swear my my VitaMix.  Makes great margaritas too Smile

Where do you buy the powders and what is their purpose in the shake? Is it for flavor or extra boost of something?

Maybe this is a seperate thread.....

Susan, I was also going to ask where you get your additional powders for the smoothies.

I'd love to find a protein powder without so much sweet taste! I buy the Whey Protein from Costco (chocolate) and after doing smoothies for a few months and cutting down on sugar, man, does it taste sweet even in a smoothie! I love the idea of protein shake, though Anybody have any ideas?

I use the Raw Family app on my iPhone for some very good smoothie recipes. Be back with some recipes later...

I get most of the powders at Vitamin Cottage Natural Grocers.  Not sure where I got the kelp as it's in a glass canning jar and I've had it a long time.  Both the Vega complete and the Barleans greens have stevia in them and they're starting to taste too sweet to me now so I'll be looking for other options when I run out.

I add them for an extra boost of nutrients that are not as bulky as whole food.  They have sprouted grasses etc. in them.

Today's smoothie which was much tastier than I was expecting -- really good and sweet in a natural way.

1 beet w/ skin and greens

2 small apples (cored)

1/2 bunch kale

small chunk of ginger

1 cup oj

2 cups water

splash of aloe vera juice

juice from 1/2 lime

ice

kelp, Vega, rice protein, Barleans greens

This was very liquidy which I prefer rather than a thick smoothie.

Ditto on the VitaMix.  Yes, they are pricey, but you will never buy another blender.  We've had ours for about 4 years now and use it practically every day.

Protein powder:  watch out for a LOT of added chemicals and sweeteners in protein powder.  Read the labels and you will be shocked.  My two favorites are NOW egg white protein, which is absolutely plain, pure egg white, and MRM egg white protein vanilla (does have stevia, but not too sweet).

I'm going to have to remember to throw in some cucumber next time!

A little limited by the size of the "Magic Bullet" but here is my go to smoothie

1/2 cup frozen blueberries

1/2 cup frozen pineapple

4-5 frozen strawberries

1/2 cup+ spinach (basically as much as I can stuff in)

2 tsp chia seeds

Juice from 2 apples or oranges (if you don't have a juicer just put in enough to help with blending)

Great for those of us avoiding dairy, makes a 16oz smoothie, enjoy!
