What do you guys think about tires?  From your personal opinion, do better tires (not wheel sets) make a difference?

Yes. Take a look at the various slicks available.

Can anyone suggest a real great tire that's at a reasonable price. I'm looking for a new pair of clinchers, just wondering what the most popular tire is.

Michelin Pro Race 2. Not cheap, but a very good tire for training and racing.

red ones are usually always the fastest.  (I will second the Michelin Pro2, as I use them now and have no complaints.  Conntinental GPs are good too from what I hear)

Yes, the rolling resistance varies alot from tire to tire, but if you want a good balance between puncture resistance but still with a good low rolling resistance, check those Mich. Pro II's and also the Continental GP4000. Check: www.biketiresdirect.com
They always have some really good tires on sale.

Another vote for the Pro Race 2s. Nice, fast tires!

  • .. also the Continental GP4000. Check: www.biketiresdirect.com
  • They always have some really good tires on sale.

The GP4000's are even cheaper at www.trioutfitter.com considering there is no shipping charge if your order is over $50.00.

Another for the Michelin Pro2 Race, with the red racing stripes, on a red bike, with ok to good wheels, red goes faster! They are great for TTs, Tri, RRs, and Crits! I only use them in races, that way they will last a whole season. Never flatted once using the Michelin Pro Race last year! One thing you will notice is in turns they stick very well.

Vredestein makes some very nice tires that are a little less expensive than the Pro Race 2s.  Plenty of folks on the bike forums like them

Pro Race 2's are a high quality standard.

The Grand Prix 3000s are good, and affordable.  The Grand Prix 4000s are even better, but pricy right now since they're relatively new on the market.

Check www.roadbikereview.com if you want to get comments on a specific tire.

I just bought a pair of Hutchison Fusion Comp Road Tires about 2 months ago, which are NOW on sale for $39 each at Performance Bicycle Shops.

    They have really been great.

Well with all this feedback I am going to invest in some solid tires.  10 BT'ers can't be wrong!

Re: Michelin Pro2 Race tires- www.biketiresdirect.com has them for $36. However, www.performancebike.com price-matches, if you're  a team performance member you will get your 10% TP points as well.

Approx how many miles should one expect to get out of the Michelins? I inspect them regularly but wonder when I should expect to see the wearing down.
