Pre-race routine:

Long drive to AC from home getting me in the parking garage at 5:30 at Trumps right next to Boardwalk Hall.
Event warmup:

Not a whole lot of time other than to walk the mile down the boardwalk to the swim start. Went into the water to check it out and took forever and a day to get out past the surf and waves to get near the starting buoy. More on that to come.

Comments:

Supposed to be a 1 mile swim going north but was switched to a 6/10 of a mile swim going south as we had about a 25 mph breeze blowing straight from the north and the waves were big and just crusin' down the beach. I was in the 4th wave so was just waiting in the corral forever while the police finished shutting down the AC Expressway. Finally the first group goes in and almost instantly they are being washed down the beach and no one is making it even to the start buoy. It was like a non stop swarm of rescue boats, jet ski's pulling people out. Second group was sent out without much more success. Right before the 3rd group (female wave) they decided correctly so to cancel the swim. It was way to dangerous and we were hearing numbers of 46 rescues. The only way to complete the swim would've been to forget they you are racing and take your time to get out to the buoy between sets of waves. As we walked back to Boardwalk Hall we came across a few unfortunate souls who actually managed to complete the swim and you must've been confused as they were still racing into transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nada.

Comments:

After the swim was cancelled there was a definite letdown by everyone in Boardwalk Hall waiting to see how they were going to start us on the bike. Ended up being an every 3 or so seconds time trial start. That same 25 mph wind that runined the swim quickly ruined my bike as I didn't have a huge desire to fight through it that hard and I swear it never seemed to be helping. Course was nice though and pretty cool riding on a shut down AC Expressway although I'm sure the folks trying to get into AC who were standing outside there cars for over an hour waiting for us to get done so they could get in didn't think so. Finally finished and really had to pee!
What would you do differently?:

HTFU and push myself I guess since it still was a race!

Comments:

Started out pretty good and was passing some folks after my crappy back segment. Saw a few bathrooms on the left of the boardwalk but didn't want to stop as was still heading south and knew I'd go by them again if I really couldn't wait when I looped back around. Run out was nice as wind was at my back but the boardwalk had some traffic on it so had to navigate around the tourists. Made the turn and at 3 miles detoured into what I thought was the bathrooms but ended up being showers! Looked around in their for about 30 seconds and then ran around to the front and lo and behold there was the bathroom. Took care of business and went on running. Wasted a solid 1 to 2 minutes though. Probably at about 4 or so miles hit some open parts of the boardwalk i.e. no casino's on the left and the wind was just whipping directly into my face with a side of sand blasting right from the beach. Just brutal. Pulled my hat down as far as it would go and was sort of running with a left tilt to try and keep it from my eyes. Really didn't enjoy that part of the run and I could still taste and see the sand at the Sammy Haggar's beach bar after the race. Finally made the turn back south and no more wind/sand in the face and just a straight line to the finish. Ok run that would've been acceptable time wise without the break in the middle.
What would you do differently?:

Should've hit the RR before heading out on the bike leg.

Event comments:

I was so looking forward to this race and swimming in the ocean, biking on the expressway and running on the boardwalk. Great idea just crappy weather/water. Would like to do again next year but may conflict with a HIM I want to do.
