I'm currently riding a Cannondale R1000 road bike with clip ons and I am really liking the aero position. I've been looking at wheel sets for the road bike, but I'm also interested in riding a tri bike. Not much cash (1500 approx) so where would my money be better spent? On race wheels for my road bike or a beginner tri bike w/ hopefully ultegra components. The sport is in me and it's not going anywhere....Eventually have goals of completing an Ironman in '08.

Check Fast Splits in Newton, or to the Wheelworks family of stores in Belmont. Even going to FitWerx in Vermont might do you well. You could find a "less expensive" tri bike (can't say you'll end up with Ultegra) for the money you want to spend and find a good fitting one. Rent the wheels.

My husband rides an older Cannondale R1000 also. Although he loves his bike, he was looking to upgrade this spring. He ended up buying a set of Mavic Ksyrium SSL and new pedals/shoes and has been very happy with these upgrades. He loves the stiffness of his new wheels and the stiff carbon soles of his new shoes. Both have added tremedously to his riding experience.

Go with the good wheels everytime. Rotating mass will give you the biggest time saving results, i.e. wheels, cranks. Static mass will save you some time but not as much as rotating mass. Besides the R1000 rocks, it was my dream bike of teh 90's, always wanted one.

If you are comfortable on the road bike and have established a good aero position then you honestly won't gain a whole lot by changing to a tri bike unless you can spring for a mid-high end ride.  I'd say go for the wheels.  They'll give you an instant and significant benefit on the road bike and can always be moved over to a tri bike when you get one.
