Subject: Garmin 910xt...worth the upgrade?
So about 4 months ago, I purchased a Nike Sportwatch for running.  I really love it while I'm running.  (I hate the Nike+ website for looking at my runs, but that's supposed to be upgraded pretty big this summer).  I'd like to buy the heart rate monitor but that costs an additional $70.  So what I'm thinking about doing is selling my Nike Sportwatch, and upgrading to the new Garmin 910xt, since I really think it'll help my tri training.  I'm definitely the type that gets motivated by knowing how far I've gone and how far I have left, and watching pace and things like that.  Granted, I have the Nike Sportwatch for running, and a Specialized bike computer with cadence for my road bike, but nothing for swimming, and nothing for heart rate.  Having something that works with all 3 activities, using one watch, and one website to upload to, seems pretty awesome.  The only thing I'm unsure about is spending $450 on a watch.  Any thoughts?!?  And people that use the 910xt, please let me know how you like it!

Got mine a couple of weeks ago and love it.  I don't do much with HR but the swim portion works fine for me after an initial glitch.  I have run and rode with it and it has worked fine.  The form factor is good and fairly close to the 405 which I had before.    Watch for sales, etc and you can probably get it cheaper (I know I did).  If you don't need ths swim portion you can always get a 405 or a 305 much cheaper.

I have ahd mine for a month or better now and could not be happier with it. I had not been using the heart rate monitor with my 405 but I started using it again when I got this watch and am glad I have. If nothing else it gives me some more data to digest.

I upgraded from a 310xt, only had it a week, but very happy, only really used for run and bike workouts to date, works identically to the 310, hope to get into the pool with it soon.

Thanks for the advice!  I pulled the trigger Sunday night and bought the 910xt, the quick connect and the bike speed/cadence sensor.  Should be getting soon!

Luckily I use an outdoor pool, but...For pool use you need to insert the length of the pool being used, I had thought that there is an accelerometer (sp) which senses the turns - but not sure

There is and I don't believe it uses the GPS for pool swims.

I'm loving mine. It uses an accelerometer for pool swims, not GPS. I always lost track of swim distance so this helps though it only works if your arm is moving and therefore not during kick sets.

You know what sucks?  Ordering the watch, the bike speed/cadence sensor, and the quick release strap all at the same time...and getting the bike sensor and strap last night but still waiting for the watch!

Couldn't be happier about upgrading from the 305.  Love love love the multisport.  You can choose ANY combo.  Great for Swim T1 Run/Bike bricks.  I have a Bike/Run/Bike/Run/Bike/Run Xtreme Brick this coming Saturday and I can't wait.

And the swim portion... I never got the Finish to work.  910XT:  Turn on, choose 25m, go.  Works flawlessly.

The satellite works A LOT quicker than the 305.  I am in love =)

I went biking with a group and forgot to pair the cadence sensor already on the bike.  Selected I had one and it gave me a warning for multiple sensors.  Once I was separated from the group, picked it up without issues and recorded it.  The foot pod and HR strap get picked up immediately, much much faster than the 305.

Got the 910xt this week.  Wow, love the swim portion.  Had a 205 before so use to the standard bike/run options.  I think the 910xt quick workouts are different, my 205 I could easly setup pace/distance work outs.  The 910xt virtual partner is different, where you can change the speed on the fly...this is good because before I had to deal with being beat or stop/started the virtual partner again. For the swim, I think the stroke rate might be off or only capture one side, which is fine just times it by 2 or deal with this number.  I love the distance tracking.  However, as I read from another review you want to stop the 910 after each set and not hit the lap button.  I mostly work from pace fields in the swim, average pace and last lenght pace. I think this tends to be best use of the watch.  The SWOLF and Efficiency ratings are food for thought, but they work off of pace anyway. I work from the pace fields to change my form a bit to see what is the impact of the time. Also, will switch up my stroke rate to see if a higher rate will make me go faster or slower...I use a tempo training to keep a consistent swim rate.  I think the watch will really help give you a base to work from, especially if you get swim lessons and see what happens to your times with form changes.  The problem that I have, is remembering what I did to swim faster...head up a bit, arch back, kick less..kick more.
