This is what my heart rate like in last half-marathon race. Pushing 82% in the red zone is crazy. I'm sure it's not normal. What's your HR zone like for longer races?

82% of what?

In other words, how did you establish which bpm go in which "zones," and how did you define those "zones"?

When I run, I'll get in the 180s and 190s. Like she said, % of what? If you're doing age based zones, they are next to worthless. Do an LT test and find out what your personal heart rate zones are.

I think my max HR is 175-177. So red zone is like Zone 5 on the HR chart.

I'm guessing your zones were calculated for you by your watch or app or whatever you're using to track it, and not by actual field testing. FWIW, my low zone 2 heart rate is right about where your average heart rate was for your race - race pace is quite a bit higher.... And I'm guessing I'm a few years older than you.... You need to do some field testing to find out what your zones should be.

That is my zone 1 after I have had my LT testing done, before I would have thought top of zone 2

"Max HR" isn't very meaningful and is taken in a number of ways. How does the HR recorded compare to your threshold? Mine was only a couple bpm under threshold, but I was also ~20 minutes ahead if that fall-off was the end of the race and not a bonk.

I hit an average of 176 during a marathon this fall and a max of 198 (my overall max is around 203). The last 5 miles were all above 185... I probably was starting to struggle near the end, but I kept my pace and my heartrate just soared. Decoupling for sure...

What does "max" really mean?

Where is your threshold HR? That would be more helpful.
