Veteran 241 Waterloo, IL | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread Not likely. I think a head wind on the return on the bike is a given. I think we can only hope for a light head wind on that return. |

Veteran 241 Waterloo, IL | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread Anton84 - 2012-02-27 10:56 PM Any feedback on this race (organization, water/air temp, wind, hills)? I'm thinking about doing it, but it's quite a drive from Chicago. I have done this race twice now. I am a MOP at best. I believe that it is a well produced race. It has gotten pretty good turnout and has grown every year. The water is generrally still pretty cold and swim is wetsuit legal. The park has a nice sand beach and the swim is a rectangular out and back. Water is very muddy, so little visibility. Last year the park had some flooding, but dropped just in time for the race. There is a nice up hill run from the the beach to the transition area. (less than 100yds) Air temps have been variable. It has tended to be farily warm. The bike course is fairly flat with what I consider rollers in the middle of the ride. It is an out and back ride. Wind has tended to be tailwind out and headwind back. This lake is popular for sailboating, so I think some wind is guaranteed. The last two years have not been too crazy though. The run is an out and back as well. The run is a flat run across the dam with a short hill at mile 1 and mile 5. There is no shade, so it can be hot. During my first time (2010), it got up to 90 during my run. There are aid stations every mile of the run. They have had Heed and water and haven't run out on me. Post race food has been sub sandwiches. Nice finisher medal for everybody. I have enjoyed this race The park has nice campgrounds as well as a couple of hotels within walking distance of the race site. BTW, is that Crowie in your profile pic? Are you a listener of The AgeGrouper podcasts? |

Member 34 | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread Abake and I had a blast at this last. Get your lodging close if you can - we were 30 miles away and kinda inconvenient and I won't really go into how bad the hotel experience was...... This race was well organized and plenty of support - shirt kinda nice in a weird way (soft cotton with a crazy logo on it). You can practice in the water the day before which was great - nice clear water - seemed to have a little wave action if I remember correctly - nothing you could really see, but I could feel it when I got out of the water. I was suprised how HOT it was on the run for how COLD it was in the water. And yeah a tailwind out on the bike course had me looking at my garmin thinking - oh, boy, I'm gonna pay for this later! I am seeking revenge on the run this year as I totally gave up in the heat. Not this time! I never want to do the same race twice, but this will be DH's first Oly and I thought a great place for him to start. |

What Mary is trying not to say is that she was separated from crazy loud people having "pizza" by a thin wall and I had the chain smokers in the room next to me. There were some weddings going on in the area so hotel rooms were at a premium. |

Are you a listener of The AgeGrouper podcasts? Thanks for the detailed reply. It sounds like a pretty good race so I'll try to make it this year. Do you know if there is a race-day packet pickup? Yeah, that's Crowie. Met him at Runners High'n Tri when he came in to do his talk. I listen to the Age Grouper, but they have not had much going on lately, so I'm catching up on the old episodes of IM Talk. |

New user 29 Southern Illinois | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread The Gateway Sprint race was my first ever last year. Will sign up for the Olympic this year. I thought this was a well run event in the past. I also hope that the flooding is under control. Agree that there will be a head wind on the bike return trip and it will be hot on the run. Look forward to meeting some BTers at the event. |

I contacted the race director on the Facebook site (3 Disciplines) and they state all of the info is on their website. I just looked and it still says Gateway page coming soon: They've killed the old website from previous years and consolidated under 3 Disciplines Racing. If you have some more specific questions, I would recommend contacting them on Facebook. They have been pretty responsive there. Love IMTalk as well. Age Grouper is pretty hit and miss, but they are at least closer to my level of participation. Kia Kaha |

Veteran 241 Waterloo, IL | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread I think a BT meet up is in order again this year. Things were pretty hit and miss last year. I walked right past ransick last year on the way to our meet up for a swim. Eventually we met up. I am tentatively planning on coming in on Saturday do some OWS (maybe a little light biking) and camp out that night so I can be fresh race day. I haven't been in my wetsuit since June of last year. |

New user 1 Washington, IL | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread i thought the 3D guys did a very professional job with the directing of this race. the swim course has excellent marking and both the bike and run courses were very well supported. the bike course does have a tough hill you hit twice. tough climb going outto that you really don't get rewarded for because of the 90°time left hander at the bottom. tough climb coming back because said 90°to turn gives you little momentum for the climb. the heat and hill on the run course definitely make it challenging. i'm seeking some revenge this year. i blew up on the bike which ended up killing my run. i learned a lot at that race. |

New user 29 Southern Illinois | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread Sorry for the late reply. Bad weather was much farther south than where I am. I do, however, know some people who had some damage. Many of our customers in the coal business are in Harrisburg. I live about 20 minutes east of Carlyle where the Gateway Tri is. Look forward to meeting up with some BTers there at the race. |

Veteran 241 Waterloo, IL | Subject: RE: Gateway Triathlon - Olympic Course : Official Thread Less than six weeks out. How is everybody doing? I had my bike checked for the season and ended up buying 2 new wheels. Apparently my bike is now consider a classic. (I bought my Raleigh road bike in 1988.) I only had one option for wheels, cheap ones, no upgrading possible. They really made me want a new bike, but I cannot do it right now. Hopefully I can buy a new bike for the 2013 season. I signed up for a sprint tri on April 28th, Escape to the Bluffs in Elsah, IL. I think it will be good to knock some of the cobwebs off. They have a hilly, technical bike course from what I've read. |
