Luray, Virginia
United States
Set-up, Inc.
60F / 16C
Overcast
Total Time = 8h 38m
Overall Rank = 5/71
Age Group = F30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/11
Pre-race routine:

I got up at 4 AM to drive to my friend Jody's house so we could head out at 5. The night before I had a surprise b-day party and a wedding reception to attend so I slept around 4 hours. I ate oats/egg whites at 4am and a power bar harvest bar around 7. I forgot to eat my pre-race gel.
Event warmup:

None :) Maybe next time I should warm-up.
Swim
  • 14m 23s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good start. It would be an easier start if the slower swimmers moved a bit to the back. We were the last wave of 6 (4 minutes sep.) so the last half of the swim was spent avoiding swimmers from the other waves. I was lucky enough to have one other girl swimming right next to me so that made the sighting easier. I consistently breathed to one side and had a good rhythm. I was not ready for the dizziness when I got out of the water and had to run up the stairs to the transition area. That was hard.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe warm-up next time.
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

Pretty slow transition. I can definately improve on this. Last minute I decided to put a thin long sleeve shirt on, which definately added time since I was sticky and the shirt was hard to put on.
What would you do differently?:

Dry my arms off first, or not put the shirt on at all.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 9s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 16.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride overall. But it is OBVIOUS that the bike is my weakest discipline. I was passed by many people. My front tire was having issues in that it wouldn't fully inflate. This made me nervous during the ride. I spent a few miles talking to a friend from college. I had half a gel halfway through the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water next time. I was really thirsty during the run. I just need more time biking.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Good transition
What would you do differently?:

Next time I will take off the long sleeve shirt PRIOR to leaving the transition area :)
Run
  • 24m 26s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Nice run. The uneven footing was difficult. It was nice to see some of my friends on the loop. I could have pushed it harder. I held back for too long, and the last sprint out of the woods was shorter than I expected.
What would you do differently?:

Review the course map before the race. I was always wondering where the course was going next. Drink some water. Push the last mile harder.
Post race
Warm down:

None.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hmmm Excuses:
C race
4 hrs of sleep
30 mile bike ride the day before.

Event comments:

The Luray triathlon was really fun and well organized..

It was a good site for my FIRST triathlon.
