Coffee, Clif Bar, baby aspirin
Event warmup:

None, it's an ultra!
Run
  • 4h 18m 11s
  • 31.07 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

After all the leg issues starting at mile 15 in Houston I was concerned my body could not hold up. Either bumping weakly mileage to 50+ after Houston or the slower pace made a huge difference. No ITB, PF, or abductor issues like I had in Houston. Glutes started getting sore after 10 but I could deal with that. Felt much better after this race physically.
What would you do differently?:

I might play with a slightly faster starting pace for the next ultra but have other experiment to try in Boston.
Post race
Warm down:

Just stretched and BS'd with friends.

Event comments:

Relative to Houston Cowtown can't compare but is a blast to run because all the running friends there.

Performance: Good
Kept HR below AeT (133) for first 20 miles and ran with my buddy Marc who was pacing the 3:40 marathoners. Had some cardiac drift into the 130s from 21 to 25 then Marc turned for the marathon finish and I continued out the Ultra finish loop. Pushed HR into 140s miles 26 to 28 then to 150s and 160s to finish.
Course: One big incline at mile 9 then small hills.

Congrats on your first ultra!  Have a feeling there will be many more to come.  Grabbed first in your AG too I see....nice.  Glad we were blessed with such awesome weather.  Question: why the baby asprin?...just part of your daily preventive care routine, or is there a reason for doing that on a race day?

Saw an article on the recent heart attack deaths by seemingly fit marathoners that pointed to two possible reasons for these occurrences.  They reccomended a baby aspirin the morning of the marathon and to limit your caffeine intake that morning to 200 mg (a tall starbucks).  I started following this routine earlier this year before the longer races to keep from keeling over...or at least to improve my odds.

I consider myself only HALF nuts to run a half marathon.... full marathoners are fully nuts.... but what does that make ultra marathoners???  Pycho???  Great job out there, I can't imagine keeping that pace for that long.... and glad the baby aspirin worked!
