I'm in the market for a set of wheels and of course zipp comes to mind but my local tri store recommended Boyd wheels as a better bang for the buck. New set of zipp 808 firecrest will be close to $3000 and a new set of Boyd 85mm will only set me back $1035. Just wanted to see if BT had any experience with Boyd wheels before I pull the trigger.

$2000 is a huge difference

They work fine. I have a set of 50mm for my road bike. Just sent the rear one back to have Boyd lace on a new PT. Boyd and his wife are first class.

Looked at them and Williams, and both are really nice. As i understand not as aero as newer wheel shapes. I am on preorder for flo... Still niggling the back of my mind as they are really light and come with ceramic bearings (Williams) standard.

Boyd, flo or Williams, all three much around the same price point. How to choose?

Flo ~300$ less and more aero. But they are aluminum with carbon fairing and thus weigh more. Like I wrote earlier, I have a set of FLOs on preorder but am rethinking that as Boyd and Williams are available and have been around plus they weigh less... I dunno

Definitely not going to pre order any product that Im not sure when I'll get, so I guess it will be Boyd or Williams for me. Looking at the felt mafia thread gave me serious wheel envy...now I want some.

williams has a good deal right now on mix sets. I just ordered their 58 carbon clincher front and the 85 carbon clincher rear. comes with scewers , shimano set up, hybrid ceramic bearings, tubes, tires, tape, pads , 2 water bottles and a t shirt for all less that 1300 bucks. this deal for the clinchers just started on march 1st.

that is the exact combo i am thinking about! are you a big guy? Im 200~ offseason 190 race season, sllightly concerned about durability of carbon over time.

I've been looking at Boyd and Williams, both seem to have good reps for customer service, and I read somewhere that they use the same supplier for the carbon wheels, and that they're the same shape.

What I haven't been able to find is what the wheel profile is, which I'm assuming is the older, more classic, tapered profile.  This would make them less stable in cross winds compared with the newer toroidal, "fatter" profile shapes.

But I think $2000.00 saved is worth it.

So the next difference is Flo, an unproven product but newer rim profile, and promising aerodynamics, vs the established Boyd/Williams wheels.  Flo has the aluminum rim with non-structural fairing, which means they have the metal braking surface, so swapping in alloy wheels won't be an issue, as far as brake pads go.  Full carbon wheel manufacturers generally state not to swap in metal wheels without changing brake pads as well, since the pads will have metal particles that will damage the carbon wheel brake surface.

I've been leaning towards Boyd.  Seems to be a toss up between them and Williams, and since I'm on the east coast as well, just figured them being closer would be better if I had to send a wheel back.

Well said! I think he only difference between the Boyd and Williams are the hubs and the spokes. Seems to me, with my limited knowledge: the Boyd has better spokes (sapim X-ray) Williams has better hubs hybrid ceramic. Please correct me if I'm wrong...

I would call them both and go with whoever you like better, they are both reputable. I've probably traded 30 emails with Boyd and his wife. Everything from wheel options to his time racing on the pro circuit and doing the Philly Internationals.

I have a set of carbon tubular 50s.  It's stiff and very light so it's great for climbing.  Customer service is excellent.

I would not worry if i were you. i'm 215 now and about 5-7lbs less for races. I spoke with a service rep at williams. he said my weight would not be a problem. reviews i have read never had any probalby. they have a year warranty.  better to spend a 1000 bucks the wheels be bad than 3000 and the wheels be bad.

Pulled the trigger with an 85/58 clincher set from Boyd.  Threw in a PT as well, figure this is the best time to do it.

Will report findings once they come in and I get some mileage on them.

Can't wait!
