During your training runs do you usually wear running shorts or tri shorts?   I am in need of some new gear and not sure which way to go.

Personal preference.

Tri shorts tend to be more expensive to I do most of my running in other gear.

That's funny! I say do whatever you want though. My run shorts disintegrated so I had to run in my tri shorts for a while. I actually think they are more comfortable than run shorts! I lived in Europe for a while so I'm putting myself in the "gay or european" category ;-) I actually asked my wife about this once, long ago (tri shorts or run shorts). Her take (as a then-non-runner) was "seriousy hon, they both look pretty goofy but who cares, you are out running".

But seriosuly, do whatever you are comfortable with. If someone has a problem with it, odds are you will never hear about it and if you do, at least you were out running! And if THAT is what someone chooses to have an issue with, they seriously need to get a life! :-)

Compression shorts or tri suit or jammers.   All running shorts I have ever had chafe.  End of story.

I must be European.  Regular running shorts chafe on any runs over 4 miles.

Whatever doesn't chafe your netherbits. But if you can pull off the compression shorts/tri shorts look, then no one is looking at your shorts. And if they're checking out your shorts, they're probably runners or triathletes anyway. ;-)

Running shorts, other than for brick runs.  Once I lost 75 lbs, I stopped having any issues with chafing on most runs.  For runs over two hours, I do wear a pair of lycra compression shorts under my running shorts.

This, and though I'm not nearly as slim or pretty as Todd (yet), if the running shorts fit well, I don't chafe. Sometimes really long hot sweaty runs here in the tropics, I'll put a dab of lube between the legs.

Tri shorts are expensive ... and you can't get them here.

Do you make your posts sound naughty on purpose or do they just come out that way?

Running shorts for training.  I look on the clearance racks at Dicks, Sports Authority, UnderArmour or Adidas outlets.  I hate paying full price.

I'm not gonna ruin a pair of tri shorts (which I only use for racing; bike shorts/bibs for my bike workouts) on my run workouts...or swim workouts (if you stick to the "train like your race" paradigm).  I may do some very short brick runs in tri shorts but even on most of my bricks I'll switch into run shorts.  I've done a ton of tris so I don't need to do my training runs or bricks in tri shorts to know what it feels like.

For just running I wear running shorts. For bricks I use tri shorts. Even short bricks in the gym on the spinner/treadmill, but mostly because there's more between me and a seat that many sweaty a$$ has ridden than anything else.

If I am going for a short run I usually wear soccer shorts and a tank top. Soccer shorts strike a good balance in that they are short enough not to get in the way but not so short they look goofy. For longer runs 5k+ it's triathlon shorts or half tights. I have worn my trisuit a few times and it was really comfortable but the occasional snarky comments from the teenies attempting to run in trash bag sized basketball shorts were annoying.

I wear spandex under a pair of sweat shorts. If I'm doing a brick, I'll wear my tri shorts and put the sweat shorts on in "transition". I've already killed one pair of spandex due to friction wear and since even cheap-o tri shorts are more expensive than spandex... no brainer for me.
