Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m 6s
Overall Rank = 125/349
Age Group = Clydesdale 40+
Age Group Rank = 4/13
Pre-race routine:

Just the usual walking abound talking to folks. Triathlon is very much a social event for me.
Event warmup:

Some light jogging and stretching.
Swim
  • 09m 24s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 21s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was pretty tired by the swim and my legs were just dragging like lead weights.
What would you do differently?:

Not be injured.
Transition 1
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

This was the transition from bike to swim. This was a backwards tri. My hip was completely shot when I hit transition and I could not run or even shuffle. I had to walk slowly from my rack to the pool and the transition area was so large and it was required that everyone go in and out the ends only. It was ridiculous, it was like a 4th event. There should have been a break in the transition area right near the pool enterence.
What would you do differently?:

Not have an injury.
Bike
  • 36m 2s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.70 mile/hr
Comments:

I was really feeling my hip on the bike. While I was albe to gut it out for the most part I could really feel the weakness. The other major problem, which i first experienced on the run, is that all the resting I have done to try and let my hip recover has caused me to loose some of my cardio endurance so I was breathing hard and hit LT at a lower level of excertion than I am used to, my body just isn't able to respond like it was even two weeks ago when the pain was higher but I still had all my cardio fitness.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

My transition time from run to bike was slowed just by the slow pace I was running. My right leg was also begining to experience weakness so I was unstable trying to get into my cycling shoes.
Run
  • 25m 21s
  • 3.05 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

This was the first event and where I really knew my race was going to be poor. My hip was stiff, which precluded a good run stride, but as I mentioned earlier the thing that really killed me was my drop in cardio fitness during this rest period. Within the first mile I was sucking air and then when the course turned into the wind people just started passing me with ease. People kept passing me for the duration of the race and painfully, I was able to watch my usual pace group completely dissapear and my competition, who I am usually busy dropping, fadeing off into the distance.
Post race
Warm down:

I hobbled around and sulked.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Loss of cardio fitness and hip injury.

Nice to see you out there Pilgrim.  Hope your hip starts feeling better soon.  I wish the refreshments- drinks and fruit were available after we finished instead of waiting for the awards gathering 2 hours later!  Hopefully we'll do better on our next race.

Good to see you again Pilgrim. Man you are still fast even hurt. Let that injury heal up and you'll start collecting hardware again.
